Background of the Study
Obesity has become a growing public health concern globally, and Kano State is no exception. In recent years, the prevalence of obesity has escalated due to shifts in dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles. The traditional diets in Kano State, once rich in whole grains and vegetables, are increasingly being replaced by high-calorie, processed foods. Concurrently, the level of physical activity has decreased as urbanization and modern conveniences reduce opportunities for regular exercise (Aliyu, 2023). These changes have contributed significantly to an increase in obesity rates, which in turn heightens the risk for chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, and hypertension.

Recent research has shown that diet and exercise are critical modifiable factors in managing body weight and reducing obesity-related risks. Diets that are high in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, combined with regular physical activity, can help manage weight and improve metabolic health (Ibrahim, 2024). However, in Kano State, there is limited empirical data on how dietary patterns and exercise habits interact to influence obesity prevalence. Socio-economic factors, cultural perceptions about body image, and limited public health initiatives further complicate the situation.

Moreover, many individuals in Kano State may not have adequate knowledge about the benefits of healthy eating and regular exercise. Public health interventions that promote balanced diets and active lifestyles are not uniformly implemented across the state, particularly in low-income communities where access to nutritious food and safe exercise environments is limited. This research aims to explore the combined effect of diet and exercise on obesity prevalence and to identify barriers to healthy lifestyles in Kano State. By integrating quantitative data from health surveys and qualitative insights from focus groups, the study will provide a comprehensive understanding of the current situation and offer evidence-based recommendations to reduce obesity rates (Bello, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Despite rising awareness about healthy lifestyles, obesity continues to increase in Kano State. Many residents consume high-calorie diets while engaging in minimal physical activity due to urbanization and lifestyle changes. This mismatch between energy intake and expenditure has led to an alarming increase in obesity-related health issues, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. The problem is compounded by limited access to healthy foods and safe spaces for exercise in certain communities (Aliyu, 2023). Furthermore, cultural norms may discourage regular physical activity, and misconceptions about body weight can hinder the adoption of healthy behaviors.

Public health initiatives aimed at promoting balanced diets and physical activity are often underfunded and unevenly distributed. As a result, a significant portion of the population, particularly in low-income areas, remains at high risk for obesity. This situation not only places a burden on the healthcare system but also adversely affects the quality of life and productivity of the affected individuals. The current gap in research on how diet and exercise collectively impact obesity in Kano State prevents the development of targeted interventions that could mitigate this growing public health challenge (Ibrahim, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the dietary habits and exercise patterns among residents of Kano State.
  • To determine the relationship between these lifestyle factors and obesity prevalence.
  • To recommend community-based interventions to promote healthier lifestyles.

Research Questions

  • How do current dietary habits and exercise levels influence obesity rates in Kano State?
  • What socio-economic and cultural factors hinder the adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors?
  • What strategies can be implemented to improve diet and exercise habits among high-risk groups?

Research Hypotheses

  • H1: Poor dietary habits are significantly associated with higher obesity prevalence.
  • H2: Lower levels of physical activity correlate with increased obesity rates.
  • H3: Community-based interventions targeting diet and exercise will reduce obesity prevalence.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on urban and peri-urban communities in Kano State. Data will be collected through household surveys, focus groups, and health records. Limitations include potential self-reporting bias and the cross-sectional nature of the data, which may not capture long-term trends.

Definitions of Terms

  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically measured by Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Diet: The habitual consumption pattern of food and beverages.
  • Exercise: Physical activity intended to improve health and fitness.
