Background of the Study
Traditional medicine has been a cornerstone of healthcare in many cultures, offering alternative approaches to disease management. In Adamawa State, traditional medicine plays a significant role in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes. Many individuals in the region rely on herbal remedies, dietary therapies, and spiritual practices passed down through generations, which are often used in conjunction with, or as an alternative to, modern medical treatments (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

Diabetes management through traditional medicine involves the use of various medicinal plants and natural compounds that are believed to regulate blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and alleviate symptoms. The appeal of traditional medicine lies in its accessibility, affordability, and cultural acceptability. Moreover, traditional healers, who are highly respected within their communities, often provide personalized care that is tailored to the individual’s cultural and spiritual needs (Chukwu, 2024).

Despite the widespread use of traditional medicine in Adamawa State, there is limited scientific evaluation of its effectiveness in managing diabetes. Concerns regarding the safety, standardization, and efficacy of traditional remedies persist, particularly when used in isolation from conventional treatments. Nevertheless, integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare approaches may offer a more holistic model of diabetes management that addresses both physiological and cultural aspects of the disease (Ogunleye, 2025).

This study aims to evaluate the role of traditional medicine in the management of diabetes in Adamawa State by exploring patient outcomes, traditional practices, and the perceptions of both healthcare providers and traditional healers. The research will assess the effectiveness of commonly used traditional remedies and identify opportunities for integration with modern diabetes management strategies. The findings are expected to inform policy and practice, promoting a complementary approach that enhances patient care.

Statement of the Problem(
In Adamawa State, many patients with diabetes turn to traditional medicine for management of their condition, often due to limited access to modern healthcare services and cultural preferences. However, the efficacy and safety of traditional remedies in managing diabetes remain inadequately documented. The lack of standardization and regulation in traditional medicine raises concerns about potential adverse effects and interactions with conventional treatments. This uncertainty hinders the integration of traditional practices with mainstream diabetes management programs (Lawal, 2023).

Furthermore, the reliance on traditional medicine may lead to delayed diagnosis and suboptimal management of diabetes, ultimately increasing the risk of complications such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, and kidney failure. The gap in evidence-based research on traditional diabetes management practices creates challenges for healthcare providers, policymakers, and patients. Without rigorous evaluation, it is difficult to ascertain which traditional interventions are beneficial and how they can be safely incorporated into comprehensive diabetes care.

This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the role of traditional medicine in managing diabetes in Adamawa State. By evaluating patient outcomes, traditional treatment modalities, and the experiences of both patients and traditional healers, the research aims to provide a clearer picture of the potential benefits and limitations of traditional diabetes management. The ultimate goal is to develop recommendations that facilitate the safe and effective integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare services, thereby improving overall diabetes management in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of traditional medicine in managing diabetes in Adamawa State.
  2. To identify common traditional practices used in diabetes management.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating traditional and modern diabetes management approaches.

Research Questions

  1. What traditional medicinal practices are used to manage diabetes in Adamawa State?
  2. How effective are these traditional methods in controlling blood glucose levels and reducing complications?
  3. What strategies can facilitate the integration of traditional and modern diabetes treatments?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Traditional medicine significantly contributes to diabetes management among patients in Adamawa State.
  2. Lack of standardization in traditional remedies is associated with variable patient outcomes.
  3. Integrative approaches will improve overall diabetes management.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on diabetic patients utilizing traditional medicine in selected communities in Adamawa State. Data will be collected through patient interviews, focus groups, and reviews of health outcomes. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and challenges in standardizing traditional practices.

Definitions of Terms
