Background of the Study
Traditional healers have long played a vital role in healthcare delivery in Sokoto State, serving as the primary source of care for many communities, particularly in rural and underserved areas. These practitioners, who utilize indigenous knowledge, herbal remedies, and culturally embedded practices, are often the first point of contact for health issues (Aliyu, 2023). In Sokoto State, where access to formal healthcare services is sometimes limited by geographical and financial constraints, traditional healers fill a critical gap by providing affordable and culturally acceptable care.
The role of traditional healers extends beyond mere treatment; they are also custodians of indigenous medical knowledge and play an important role in health education and community support. However, their practices often exist outside the regulated healthcare system, raising concerns about the safety, efficacy, and integration of traditional medicine with modern healthcare approaches (Ibrahim, 2024). Despite these concerns, many community members continue to prefer traditional healers due to their accessibility, affordability, and the deep cultural trust they enjoy.
This reliance on traditional healers is also influenced by socio-cultural factors. In many parts of Sokoto State, traditional beliefs and practices are interwoven with the community’s understanding of health and illness. As a result, even when formal healthcare facilities are available, individuals may opt for traditional healing methods that align with their cultural values and personal experiences. The challenge for policymakers and healthcare practitioners lies in bridging the gap between traditional and modern healthcare systems to ensure that patients receive safe, effective, and culturally sensitive care (Bello, 2023).
This study aims to appraise the role of traditional healers in healthcare delivery in Sokoto State by examining their contributions, challenges, and potential for integration with formal healthcare systems. The research will employ a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with community members and traditional practitioners, to assess the impact of traditional healing on health outcomes and patient satisfaction. The findings will provide valuable insights into how traditional healers can complement modern healthcare efforts, ensuring that health services are both accessible and culturally appropriate.
Statement of the Problem
In Sokoto State, traditional healers continue to be a major source of healthcare for many communities, particularly in rural areas where access to formal medical services is limited. Despite their popularity, there are concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of traditional healing practices. The lack of regulation and standardized training among traditional healers poses risks, including misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and delays in accessing formal healthcare when needed (Aliyu, 2023). Moreover, the absence of integration between traditional and modern healthcare systems means that opportunities for collaborative care are often missed, leaving patients to choose between two disparate systems.
This fragmented healthcare landscape contributes to a situation where patients may not receive the most effective or timely treatments for their conditions. The trust placed in traditional healers, while culturally significant, may also lead to the perpetuation of practices that lack scientific validation. Additionally, the limited documentation and research on the outcomes of traditional healing further complicate efforts to assess its overall impact on public health in Sokoto State (Ibrahim, 2024).
The problem is further compounded by socio-cultural factors that discourage patients from seeking formal medical care. In many communities, traditional healers are not only trusted for their remedies but are also seen as custodians of cultural identity. This cultural preference can deter patients from utilizing modern healthcare services even when they are available and potentially more effective. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive evaluation of the role of traditional healers in the local healthcare ecosystem, which this study aims to provide, thereby offering policy recommendations to integrate traditional and modern practices for improved health outcomes (Bello, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on selected rural communities in Sokoto State where traditional healing is prevalent. Data will be collected via surveys, interviews, and focus groups with community members and traditional healers. Limitations include potential bias in self-reported data and challenges in standardizing traditional practices.
