Background of the Study
Fast food consumption has become increasingly prevalent in many parts of the world, and its impact on obesity is well documented. In Katsina State, the rapid expansion of urban centers and the growth of the fast-food industry have led to a significant rise in the consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods. Fast foods, which are typically high in fats, sugars, and calories, contribute to an imbalance in energy intake, thereby increasing the risk of obesity among the population (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).
Urbanization in Katsina State has facilitated the proliferation of fast-food outlets, making these foods readily accessible and affordable. The convenience and palatability of fast food attract consumers from various socio-economic backgrounds, particularly among young adults and working professionals. The frequent consumption of fast food is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including weight gain, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. Research indicates that there is a positive correlation between fast food consumption and obesity prevalence, as the high caloric content of these foods often leads to chronic energy surplus and fat accumulation (Chukwu, 2024).
This study aims to examine the relationship between fast food consumption and obesity in Katsina State by assessing dietary patterns and their association with body mass index (BMI) among residents. The study will explore factors that drive fast food consumption, such as convenience, marketing strategies, and lifestyle preferences. Additionally, it will consider the role of socio-demographic factors in shaping dietary habits. The findings are expected to provide evidence-based insights that can inform public health strategies aimed at reducing obesity through improved dietary guidelines and interventions targeting fast food consumption.
Statement of the Problem
In Katsina State, the growing popularity of fast food has contributed to a significant rise in obesity rates. Despite the convenience and affordability of fast food, its high caloric and low nutritional quality are major factors driving weight gain. Many residents, particularly in urban areas, have increasingly relied on fast food due to busy lifestyles and aggressive marketing, leading to chronic overconsumption of unhealthy foods. This trend has resulted in an obesogenic environment where obesity-related health issues, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, are becoming more prevalent (Lawal, 2023).
The lack of awareness about the health risks associated with fast food consumption, combined with limited access to healthier alternatives, further exacerbates the problem. Although public health campaigns have been launched to promote healthy eating, these efforts have not sufficiently curbed the growing trend of fast-food consumption. Consequently, obesity rates continue to rise, placing a substantial burden on the healthcare system and affecting the overall quality of life for many residents.
There is a need for comprehensive research that investigates the direct relationship between fast food consumption and obesity in Katsina State. This study seeks to fill this gap by analyzing dietary patterns and their impact on body weight, thereby providing a clearer understanding of the contributing factors to obesity. The insights gained will be crucial for developing targeted interventions and policy measures to promote healthier dietary choices and mitigate obesity in the region.
