Background of the Study
Aflatoxins are toxic metabolites produced by certain fungi that commonly contaminate stored grains, posing serious health risks to consumers. In Yobe State, stored grains are a staple food source, and improper storage practices can lead to significant aflatoxin contamination. Factors such as high humidity, inadequate ventilation, and prolonged storage durations provide favorable conditions for fungal growth, which in turn increases the levels of aflatoxins in food products (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023).

Aflatoxin contamination is associated with a range of adverse health outcomes, including liver cancer, immune suppression, and stunted growth in children. The economic impact is also considerable, as contaminated grains may be unfit for consumption or export, affecting both local food security and farmers’ livelihoods. Despite the implementation of some regulatory measures and awareness campaigns, the prevalence of aflatoxins in stored grains remains high in Yobe State, highlighting the need for effective intervention strategies (Chukwu, 2024).

This study aims to assess the extent of aflatoxin contamination in stored grains across Yobe State. By analyzing grain samples from various storage facilities and correlating contamination levels with storage conditions, the research will identify critical control points where improvements are needed. The study will also explore the awareness and practices of grain handlers regarding aflatoxin prevention and control. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, informing strategies to reduce aflatoxin contamination and safeguard public health (Ogunleye, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Yobe State, aflatoxin contamination in stored grains poses a serious public health and economic challenge. Many farmers and grain traders continue to use traditional storage methods that do not adequately protect against fungal growth. As a result, grains are frequently contaminated with aflatoxins, which can lead to significant health issues such as liver cancer and immune suppression, particularly in vulnerable populations (Uche, 2024).

The lack of proper storage infrastructure, coupled with insufficient awareness of aflatoxin risks, has allowed contamination levels to remain high. Regulatory oversight and enforcement regarding storage practices are often limited, making it difficult to implement effective control measures. This situation not only compromises food safety but also affects market access and the economic well-being of those reliant on grain production (Lawal, 2023).

This study seeks to systematically assess aflatoxin contamination in stored grains in Yobe State, identify the storage practices contributing to high contamination levels, and evaluate the awareness of aflatoxin risks among grain handlers. Addressing these challenges is critical for developing interventions that improve storage conditions and reduce aflatoxin exposure, thereby protecting public health and supporting agricultural productivity.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To measure the levels of aflatoxin contamination in stored grains in Yobe State.
  2. To identify the storage practices that contribute to aflatoxin contamination.
  3. To recommend strategies to reduce aflatoxin levels and improve grain storage.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current levels of aflatoxin contamination in stored grains in Yobe State?
  2. Which storage practices are most associated with increased aflatoxin levels?
  3. What interventions can reduce aflatoxin contamination in stored grains?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Inadequate storage practices are significantly associated with higher aflatoxin contamination.
  2. There is a strong correlation between environmental conditions in storage facilities and aflatoxin levels.
  3. Improved storage practices and training will significantly reduce aflatoxin contamination.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on selected grain storage facilities in Yobe State. Data will be collected via laboratory analyses, interviews, and field observations. Limitations include seasonal variations in contamination levels and access to remote storage sites.

Definitions of Terms

  • Aflatoxin: A toxic substance produced by certain molds that contaminate food products.
  • Stored Grains: Cereals and legumes kept in storage facilities for consumption or sale.
  • Contamination: The presence of harmful substances in food products.
