Background of the Study
Food safety knowledge is a critical factor in the prevention of foodborne diseases. In Jigawa State, where foodborne illnesses pose a significant public health threat, understanding the relationship between food safety knowledge and disease prevention is paramount. Food safety knowledge includes awareness of proper food handling, storage, and preparation techniques that minimize the risk of contamination (Okoro, 2023; Musa, 2024).

In Jigawa State, a considerable segment of the population relies on informal food markets and traditional food preparation methods. These settings often lack formal food safety training, leading to variations in the practices employed by food handlers. Previous research has shown that individuals with higher levels of food safety knowledge are more likely to implement practices that reduce the risk of contamination and, consequently, the incidence of foodborne diseases (Chukwu, 2024). However, gaps in knowledge persist due to limited access to educational resources and inadequate public health messaging.

The dissemination of food safety information through community programs, local media, and governmental initiatives is essential to improve public health outcomes. An in-depth understanding of how food safety knowledge translates into preventive behaviors will help inform the development of targeted educational interventions. This study will examine the correlation between food safety knowledge and the incidence of foodborne diseases in Jigawa State, exploring the effectiveness of existing educational programs and identifying areas where improvements are needed (Adebayo, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Jigawa State, foodborne diseases continue to be a significant health challenge, exacerbated by low levels of food safety knowledge among food handlers and consumers. Despite efforts to promote food safety, many individuals remain unaware of the best practices necessary to prevent contamination. This lack of knowledge contributes to the persistence of foodborne illnesses, placing an undue burden on the healthcare systemand negatively impacting community well-being (Ibrahim, 2024).

Furthermore, the relationship between food safety knowledge and the implementation of preventive measures has not been adequately explored in the context of Jigawa State. The absence of robust educational programs and limited access to accurate information have resulted in a scenario where preventive behaviors are not consistently practiced. This gap in knowledge is particularly evident among vendors in informal markets and households that rely on traditional methods of food preparation (Ogunleye, 2023).

Addressing this issue is critical for developing effective interventions that can reduce the incidence of foodborne diseases. This study seeks to fill the research gap by examining the extent of food safety knowledge among various stakeholders and assessing its impact on disease prevention. By identifying deficiencies in current educational strategies, the research aims to provide actionable recommendations for improving public health outcomes in Jigawa State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the level of food safety knowledge among food handlers and consumers in Jigawa State.
  2. To assess the relationship between food safety knowledge and the prevalence of foodborne diseases.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing food safety education and disease prevention.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of food safety knowledge among stakeholders in Jigawa State?
  2. How does food safety knowledge influence the prevention of foodborne diseases?
  3. What interventions can effectively improve food safety education?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of food safety knowledge are associated with lower incidences of foodborne diseases.
  2. Inadequate food safety education significantly contributes to the prevalence of foodborne illnesses.
  3. Targeted educational interventions will improve food safety practices and reduce disease rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on both formal and informal food handlers and consumers in Jigawa State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews. Limitations include variability in respondents’ self-reported knowledge and potential sampling biases.

Definitions of Terms

  • Food Safety Knowledge: The understanding of proper food handling, storage, and preparation methods that prevent contamination.
  • Disease Prevention: Strategies and behaviors that reduce the incidence of foodborne illnesses.
  • Foodborne Diseases: Illnesses caused by consuming contaminated food.
