INTRODUCTION

Currently, all work associated with the admission of students is performed manually using ink and paper, which is exceedingly slow and requires much effort and time (Hewlett 2021). Design of a computerised automated student admission system is required in order to speed up and simplify the method. Admissions are essential to the operation of a university because students are what keep a university alive (Iwhiwhu 2021). Admission of students is one of the most vital operations within a university, as the institution cannot operate without them. A faulty admissions system may result in fewer students getting admitted to an institution due to errors or excessively slow response times. The procedure begins with a prospective student completing an application form through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. The initial step for students is to apply directly to the university via a specialised web form (Hewlett 2021). The objective of this project is to automate the procedure by pre-checking for the presence of all essential materials and automatically ranking each student's application based on a variety of factors (Iwhiwhu 2021). These factors include the ranking of their institution, their grade at that institution, and their Certificate language grade. The system stores its data in a database that will serve as the central repository for all student-related information and the foundation for the remainder of the application process. This enables things to be greatly streamlined and expedited, making the duties of those concerned much simpler. It supports the current procedure but centralises it, allowing for quicker and simpler decision-making (Lisa 2022).

In this age, the majority of tasks are performed in a manner similar to that of automation, compared to some of the eras that the human species has passed through since its existence on earth (Iwhiwhu 2021). Some of these ages include the stone age, the manual age, the mechanical age, and the current automation age, which is characterised by the use of computers and other automation-related technology to speed up or make tasks simpler than in the past. As it pertains to this project, the type of work entails making information dissemination and data collection simple, durable, and portable (Lisa 2022).

For the admission and result checking system in a high institution, the manual way of managing admission and result checking was a source of stress for both students seeking admission and students checking their results, as well as admission workers (Hewlett 2021). As a result of the current automation age, a system for accomplishing the aforementioned tasks online will be advantageous to Nigeria's higher education institutions by lowering fraud risk, stress, etc. associated with the admission and result verification processes.

Before the aforementioned system can be implemented, a thorough investigation and comprehension of the current system and the need for the new system will be conducted. Since it incorporates the internet, computers and other online information management technologies, such as internet facilities, must be required. (Hewlett 2021).

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The background of the study is Covenant polytechnic Abia.  Here is the brief history about the Institute from the school official website.

In a bold attempt to fully top the potentials of the private sector in the areas of education, the Education (National Minimum Standards and Establishment of institutions) Decree of 1985 was amended in 1993 January as follows:

An Institute of the Federation or of a state of by a local government or by any of the following, that is:

    a.    By company incorporated in Nigeria or

    b.    By an individual who satisfy the criteria set in the schedule to this Act for establishment of institutions.

Following this Decree, the guidelines for the establishment of Private Polytechnics, monotechnics and other similar tertiary institutions was drafted as a guide for all prospective proprietors of private polytechnics and colleges of technologies, with the National Board for Technical Education (N.B.T.E) As the statutory body set up by the Federal Government to manage and control all matters relating to polytechnics.

With this deliberate policy of government, Covenant Polytechnic was established as an answer to the cry of thousands of Benue indigenes who were either being eliminated out of other schools or could not gain admission into the only one existing polytechnic in the state and elsewhere. Thus, the Very Revd. Fr. Dr. Chris Utov came into the initiative to establish Covenant Polytechnic inorder to complement government’s effort in the education sector through private participation.

The Polytechnic accordingly complied with all statutory rules for the establishment of a private tertiary institution and obtained official consent and approval to operate in September 1996 from the state ministry of Education, Abia, Abia State.

However, Covenant has not been established as a “comparative pride” or as an “opposition academy” to any other in Benue State or elsewhere, but as a child of academic necessity and in answer to as well as in fulfillment of several contending and prevailing circumstances.
