Background of the Study
The exponential growth of biomedical data in Nigeria has highlighted the need for robust, scalable platforms that can facilitate data sharing, analysis, and collaboration among healthcare institutions. Cloud computing offers a cost-effective and flexible solution for managing large datasets, enabling real-time data access and analysis. At the University of Abuja, FCT, researchers are designing a cloud-based bioinformatics platform aimed at enhancing healthcare delivery by centralizing genomic, clinical, and epidemiological data (Olawale, 2023). This platform integrates advanced computational tools with secure data storage solutions to support high-throughput analyses, data mining, and predictive modeling. By leveraging cloud infrastructure, the system can dynamically allocate computational resources, ensuring efficient processing even during peak data influx periods. The platform is designed with interoperability in mind, allowing seamless integration with existing hospital information systems and facilitating data exchange between research institutions and clinical settings (Ibrahim, 2024). Furthermore, the use of standardized data formats and automated pipelines ensures data consistency and reliability. This initiative is driven by the need to overcome the limitations of traditional, on-premises data management systems, which are often expensive, inflexible, and prone to data silos. By providing a unified, accessible platform, the project aims to foster collaborative research, accelerate diagnostic processes, and ultimately improve patient outcomes. The interdisciplinary team behind the project includes computer scientists, bioinformaticians, and healthcare professionals who work together to ensure that the platform meets both technical and clinical requirements. Overall, this study represents a significant step toward modernizing healthcare data management in Nigeria, promoting precision medicine and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice (Chukwu, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Healthcare institutions in Nigeria are facing significant challenges in managing and analyzing the rapidly increasing volumes of biomedical data. Traditional data storage systems are fragmented, lack interoperability, and are insufficiently scalable to meet current demands. At the University of Abuja, FCT, the absence of a centralized cloud-based bioinformatics platform has led to data silos and inefficiencies in data analysis, hindering timely clinical decision-making (Bello, 2023). Existing systems are often expensive to maintain and lack the flexibility required to adapt to the evolving needs of modern healthcare research. Furthermore, the integration of diverse data types—ranging from genomic sequences to clinical records—remains a critical barrier to developing comprehensive diagnostic and treatment strategies. These challenges not only delay research outputs but also impact the quality of patient care. There is an urgent need for an integrated, cloud-based platform that can centralize data, facilitate collaborative research, and enable real-time analysis. This study aims to address these issues by designing and implementing a cloud-based bioinformatics platform that ensures secure, scalable, and interoperable data management. By optimizing data processing workflows and providing a unified interface for data analysis, the platform is expected to enhance the efficiency of healthcare delivery, reduce diagnostic turnaround times, and support the advancement of personalized medicine. The proposed solution will be evaluated for its performance, scalability, and user-friendliness, providing a model that can be adopted by other healthcare institutions across Nigeria (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a cloud-based bioinformatics platform that centralizes biomedical data for Nigerian healthcare institutions.

  2. To implement and test the platform for data integration and real-time analysis.

  3. To evaluate the platform’s impact on improving data accessibility and clinical decision-making.

Research Questions

  1. How can a cloud-based platform improve data management in Nigerian healthcare institutions?

  2. What are the key technical challenges in integrating diverse biomedical data?

  3. How does the platform influence clinical decision-making and research collaboration?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it proposes a cloud-based bioinformatics platform to address data management challenges in Nigerian healthcare institutions. By centralizing data and enhancing interoperability, the platform aims to accelerate research, improve clinical diagnostics, and promote personalized medicine. The findings will provide a scalable model for modernizing healthcare data systems, ultimately contributing to better patient care and efficient resource utilization (Olawale, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of a cloud-based bioinformatics platform at the University of Abuja, FCT. It focuses exclusively on genomic and clinical data integration and does not cover other biomedical data types.
