Background of the Study
With the rapid growth of urban populations, the issue of traffic congestion has become a major concern in cities worldwide, including Nigerian cities. In response to this growing challenge, smart cities are leveraging advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance urban mobility. However, these systems face limitations in handling the vast amounts of real-time data generated by city-wide traffic management. Quantum computing, with its powerful processing capabilities, offers a potential solution to enhance traffic management systems in smart cities.

The University of Jos, located in Plateau State, provides an excellent case study for exploring the integration of quantum computing in traffic management. Quantum-assisted traffic management systems have the potential to optimize traffic flow, reduce waiting times, and enhance overall transportation efficiency. By utilizing quantum algorithms, traffic systems could process data exponentially faster, offering real-time solutions for dynamic traffic patterns in urban areas. This study will explore the potential for quantum-assisted systems to improve traffic management strategies at the University of Jos, contributing to the broader efforts in making Nigerian cities smarter.

Statement of the Problem
Traffic congestion is a persistent issue in many urban areas, and the existing traffic management systems are often overwhelmed by the volume of data they must process. While traditional algorithms and AI-based models have shown promise, they still struggle with real-time, large-scale data processing. The integration of quantum computing into traffic management systems could potentially address these limitations by providing faster and more efficient processing of traffic data. This research aims to investigate the feasibility and impact of quantum-assisted traffic management systems in improving urban mobility at the University of Jos.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement a quantum-assisted traffic management system for urban mobility at the University of Jos.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of quantum algorithms in optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion at the University.

  3. To evaluate the challenges and potential benefits of integrating quantum computing into existing traffic management systems.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum-assisted traffic management systems optimize traffic flow at the University of Jos?

  2. What improvements can quantum algorithms bring to real-time data processing in traffic management?

  3. What are the key challenges in integrating quantum computing into the University of Jos’ traffic management system?

Significance of the Study
This research will contribute to the development of smart city infrastructure by examining how quantum computing can enhance traffic management. It could provide valuable insights for city planners and policymakers looking to improve urban mobility and reduce congestion in Nigerian cities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implementation of quantum-assisted traffic management systems at the University of Jos. It will not extend to other cities or regions, nor will it consider traffic systems outside the University environment.

Definitions of Terms
