Background of the Study
The sharing of research data is an essential part of academic collaboration and the advancement of knowledge. However, traditional methods of file sharing often come with security vulnerabilities, such as unauthorized access, data breaches, and the risk of tampering with critical research information. Quantum cryptography, particularly Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), offers a promising solution to these challenges by providing unbreakable encryption methods that protect data during transmission (Bennett et al., 2023). With quantum encryption, data can be securely shared among researchers, ensuring that it remains confidential and intact.

At the University of Abuja, FCT, where extensive research activities take place across multiple fields, ensuring the security of shared data between researchers and departments is crucial. The integration of quantum computing-based security systems into the university’s data-sharing infrastructure would mitigate risks associated with data theft, loss, and manipulation. This study will focus on designing a quantum-secure file sharing system that incorporates the latest quantum encryption techniques to protect research data at the University of Abuja.

Statement of the Problem
While secure data sharing is critical in academic research, the existing encryption systems used by institutions such as the University of Abuja may not be resistant to emerging quantum computing threats. Classical encryption methods such as RSA are vulnerable to quantum algorithms like Shor’s algorithm, which can easily break traditional encryption schemes (Shor, 2023). There is a need to develop a quantum-secure file sharing system for academic institutions, ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of research data in the face of these emerging threats. This study will address the challenges of implementing quantum-secure file sharing systems in a university research context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a quantum-secure file sharing system for research data at the University of Abuja.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the quantum-secure file sharing system in ensuring data confidentiality and integrity.

  3. To assess the challenges and limitations of implementing a quantum-secure file sharing system at the university.

Research Questions

  1. How can a quantum-secure file sharing system be designed to protect research data at the University of Abuja?

  2. What is the effectiveness of quantum-secure file sharing systems compared to traditional encryption methods?

  3. What challenges are involved in implementing quantum-secure file sharing systems for academic research at the University of Abuja?

Significance of the Study
This study will enhance the security of research data at the University of Abuja by exploring quantum-secure file sharing systems. The research will contribute to advancing secure data management practices in academic institutions and demonstrate how quantum technologies can be applied to protect sensitive research information.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of a quantum-secure file sharing system at the University of Abuja, FCT. It will not cover other universities or research institutions.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD): A cryptographic method that uses quantum mechanics to securely share encryption keys between parties.

  2. Quantum Cryptography: The use of quantum computing principles to secure communication channels and protect data from unauthorized access.

  3. File Sharing System: A system used to transfer and store files among multiple users or computers, especially for collaborative work in academic or professional settings.
