Background of the Study
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has seen significant advancements in recent years, with applications ranging from image recognition to predictive analytics. However, the development of complex AI models often faces limitations in processing power and computational efficiency. Quantum computing, by harnessing quantum mechanical phenomena, can provide the computational power needed to enhance AI algorithms, especially in tasks that require processing large datasets or complex optimizations (Bauer & Sadhu, 2024). Quantum-enhanced AI algorithms have the potential to revolutionize machine learning, data analysis, and pattern recognition by exploiting quantum parallelism and superposition to achieve faster processing and more accurate models (Huang et al., 2023).

Plateau State University, Bokkos, is poised to explore how quantum computing can enhance AI applications. This study will evaluate the integration of quantum computing into AI research at the university, particularly in the areas of machine learning, neural networks, and data analytics. The research will also examine the practical challenges and implications of implementing quantum-enhanced AI technologies in academic environments.

Statement of the Problem
The field of AI faces significant challenges due to the limitations of classical computing, particularly when dealing with large-scale datasets or complex algorithms. While quantum computing promises to address these challenges by providing enhanced computational power, its integration into AI applications is still in the early stages. Plateau State University, Bokkos, aims to explore quantum computing for AI but faces obstacles such as lack of expertise, infrastructure, and the high computational cost of quantum hardware. This study will assess the potential of quantum computing to enhance AI applications and evaluate the specific challenges of adopting this technology in a Nigerian university context.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of quantum computing in enhancing AI applications at Plateau State University.

  2. To assess the impact of quantum computing on machine learning models and data analytics.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating quantum computing into AI research at Plateau State University.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum computing improve the performance of AI applications at Plateau State University?

  2. What impact does quantum computing have on the efficiency and accuracy of machine learning models?

  3. What challenges must Plateau State University overcome to integrate quantum computing into AI research?

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the potential of quantum computing to enhance AI applications, particularly in academic research. The findings will be crucial for Plateau State University as it explores the integration of quantum computing into its AI research initiatives and academic programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the role of quantum computing in AI applications at Plateau State University, Bokkos. It will not cover AI applications in other sectors or explore the broader implementation of quantum computing in AI at a national level.
