Background of the Study
Online student portals have become essential tools for university administration, allowing students to register for courses, check grades, access academic resources, and perform other critical tasks. However, the security of these portals is a major concern, as they hold sensitive student data that is susceptible to hacking, identity theft, and unauthorized access. Traditional authentication methods, such as passwords and two-factor authentication, are increasingly vulnerable to cyberattacks, particularly with the advancement of quantum computing, which threatens to render current cryptographic systems obsolete (McCarthy & Zhang, 2023).

Quantum-resistant cryptography, also known as post-quantum cryptography, is an emerging field that seeks to develop cryptographic systems that are secure against both classical and quantum computing attacks. The development of a quantum-resistant authentication system for online student portals at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, is essential to ensuring that sensitive student data remains secure in the face of future technological advancements. This study will explore the feasibility of implementing quantum-resistant authentication protocols in the university's online student portal, providing a more robust solution to protect student information from quantum-enabled cyber threats.

Statement of the Problem
The existing authentication methods for online student portals at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, rely on traditional cryptographic techniques, which are vulnerable to attacks from quantum computers. As quantum computing technology advances, these methods will become increasingly ineffective, exposing student data to potential breaches. The university requires a quantum-resistant solution to protect sensitive student data and ensure the long-term security of its online student portal. While quantum-resistant cryptography has been proposed as a solution, its application to university portals remains under-explored. This research aims to design and implement a quantum-resistant authentication system for the university's online student portal.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a quantum-resistant authentication system for the online student portal at Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

  2. To evaluate the security of the quantum-resistant authentication system in protecting student data from quantum-enabled cyberattacks.

  3. To assess the feasibility and practicality of implementing quantum-resistant authentication protocols in the university’s existing online portal.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum-resistant authentication systems enhance the security of online student portals at Nasarawa State University?

  2. What are the strengths and limitations of quantum-resistant authentication methods compared to traditional methods?

  3. What challenges will Nasarawa State University face in implementing quantum-resistant authentication systems for its online portal?

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the development of more secure online student portals by exploring the use of quantum-resistant cryptography. The findings will help Nasarawa State University enhance the security of its online portal, safeguarding sensitive student data against future quantum computing threats. The research will also provide a foundation for other universities in Nigeria to adopt similar quantum-resistant security measures.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of a quantum-resistant authentication system for the online student portal at Nasarawa State University, Keffi. The research will not address other security aspects of the university’s digital systems or the application of quantum-resistant cryptography in other areas.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Quantum-Resistant Cryptography: Cryptographic methods designed to be secure against the potential capabilities of quantum computers.

  2. Authentication System: A system used to verify the identity of users and control access to digital resources, such as student portals.

  3. Post-Quantum Cryptography: Cryptographic algorithms that are designed to be secure against both classical and quantum computer attacks.
