Background of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound effects on healthcare systems worldwide, including disruptions to routine immunization services. In Adamawa State, like many other regions, the focus on combating COVID-19 led to the suspension or delay of routine immunization programs. This has had serious implications for public health, particularly in maintaining immunity levels for vaccine-preventable diseases and preventing outbreaks.

During the pandemic, factors such as lockdowns, social distancing measures, and the reallocation of healthcare resources to COVID-19 response efforts contributed to the reduction of routine vaccination sessions. Consequently, children and vulnerable populations missed scheduled vaccines, potentially leading to increased risks of outbreaks of diseases like measles, polio, and diphtheria. This study seeks to assess the extent to which COVID-19 disrupted routine immunization services in Adamawa State and its long-term implications for public health.

Statement of the Problem

The disruption of routine immunization services due to COVID-19 restrictions has resulted in missed vaccination opportunities, which may lead to an increase in vaccine-preventable diseases in Adamawa State. This study aims to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine immunization services, the challenges faced, and the subsequent effects on public health outcomes in the state.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of COVID-19 on routine immunization services in Adamawa State.

2. To examine the challenges faced by health workers in delivering immunization services during the pandemic.

3. To recommend strategies for recovering and improving routine immunization coverage in Adamawa State in the post-COVID era.

Research Questions

1. What was the impact of COVID-19 on routine immunization services in Adamawa State?

2. What challenges did health workers face in delivering immunization services during the pandemic?

3. How can immunization coverage be restored and improved in Adamawa State following the disruption caused by COVID-19?

Research Hypotheses

1. COVID-19 significantly disrupted routine immunization services in Adamawa State.

2. Health workers faced significant challenges in delivering routine immunization services during the pandemic.

3. Post-pandemic strategies, including catch-up vaccination campaigns, will improve routine immunization coverage in Adamawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on assessing the impact of COVID-19 on routine immunization services in Adamawa State. The limitations may include data collection challenges due to the ongoing recovery process and potential delays in immunization campaigns.

Definition of Terms

• Routine Immunization Services: Regular vaccination programs aimed at providing vaccines to infants, children, and vulnerable populations as per established schedules.

• COVID-19 Disruption: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on normal healthcare services, including delays or suspensions of routine immunization activities.

• Catch-up Vaccination Campaigns: Special vaccination drives aimed at vaccinating those who missed their scheduled vaccines due to disruptions like the COVID-19 pandemic.
