Background of the Study

In Bauchi State, food safety awareness remains low, particularly in rural areas where many consumers do not have access to basic food safety information. The food safety behaviors of consumers, including the selection, handling, and preparation of food, are often influenced by various factors such as socio-economic status, educational background, and cultural practices. Without proper knowledge of food safety standards, consumers may unknowingly expose themselves to health risks, including foodborne illnesses caused by poor food handling, improper storage, and the consumption of contaminated food.

Consumer behavior regarding food safety in Bauchi State is a critical area of concern. Many individuals, especially those in rural areas, may not understand the importance of hygiene practices such as washing hands before eating, ensuring food is cooked thoroughly, or avoiding the consumption of expired food. This study aims to investigate consumer behavior and food safety awareness in Bauchi State, focusing on how these factors influence the prevalence of foodborne illnesses in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing concern about foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State, there is a lack of comprehensive research on consumer behavior and food safety awareness. Poor food safety practices, such as improper food storage, contamination during food preparation, and consumption of expired or spoiled food, contribute to the rise in foodborne diseases. This study will investigate how consumer behavior and the level of food safety awareness affect public health outcomes in Bauchi State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the level of food safety awareness among consumers in Bauchi State.

2. To assess the relationship between consumer behavior and foodborne illness incidence in Bauchi State.

3. To provide recommendations for improving food safety practices and increasing consumer awareness in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of food safety awareness among consumers in Bauchi State?

2. How does consumer behavior influence the incidence of foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State?

3. What interventions can improve food safety practices and consumer awareness in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Low food safety awareness is associated with poor food safety practices in Bauchi State.

2. There is a significant relationship between consumer behavior and the incidence of foodborne illnesses in Bauchi State.

3. Increasing food safety awareness among consumers will reduce the incidence of foodborne diseases in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the evaluation of consumer behavior and food safety awareness in Bauchi State. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data on foodborne illnesses due to underreporting, as well as the difficulty of reaching remote rural areas for data collection.

Definition of Terms
