Background of the Study
The rapid shift to online education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has introduced several challenges, particularly in maintaining the integrity and security of online university examinations. One of the primary concerns in online testing is ensuring that the student taking the exam is indeed the registered candidate and not someone impersonating them (Mabrouk & Ajibade, 2024). Traditional identity verification methods, such as passwords or manual identity checks, are susceptible to fraud and manipulation (Sulaimon & Abubakar, 2023). AI-based identity verification systems, however, offer a more secure alternative by leveraging biometric features such as facial recognition, voice recognition, and keystroke dynamics (Elimin & Yusof, 2024). These AI-driven systems are capable of real-time, accurate, and continuous verification of the student’s identity during the exam, significantly reducing the risk of cheating and identity fraud (Aziz et al., 2025).
Federal University, Lafia, located in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, presents an interesting case for implementing AI-based identity verification for online exams. The university, like many others, has adopted online assessments as part of its academic operations but faces significant challenges regarding exam security (Oluwadare & Odeyemi, 2023). The implementation of AI-based identity verification could enhance the integrity of online exams by ensuring that students' identities are verified at every stage of the examination, making cheating more difficult (Adamu & Gado, 2023). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based identity verification in enhancing the security of online exams at the university.
Statement of the Problem
The shift to online examinations at Federal University, Lafia, has exposed the institution to various security vulnerabilities, particularly concerning identity verification. Traditional methods of identity verification, such as student ID checks and passwords, have proven to be inadequate in preventing impersonation and other forms of cheating (Musa & Bello, 2024). The university lacks an efficient and reliable system to ensure the authenticity of students during online assessments, which jeopardizes the credibility of the examination process. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of AI-based identity verification in securing online exams at Federal University, Lafia.
