Background of the Study
The rapid shift to online education, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has introduced several challenges, particularly in maintaining the integrity and security of online university examinations. One of the primary concerns in online testing is ensuring that the student taking the exam is indeed the registered candidate and not someone impersonating them (Mabrouk & Ajibade, 2024). Traditional identity verification methods, such as passwords or manual identity checks, are susceptible to fraud and manipulation (Sulaimon & Abubakar, 2023). AI-based identity verification systems, however, offer a more secure alternative by leveraging biometric features such as facial recognition, voice recognition, and keystroke dynamics (Elimin & Yusof, 2024). These AI-driven systems are capable of real-time, accurate, and continuous verification of the student’s identity during the exam, significantly reducing the risk of cheating and identity fraud (Aziz et al., 2025).

Federal University, Lafia, located in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State, presents an interesting case for implementing AI-based identity verification for online exams. The university, like many others, has adopted online assessments as part of its academic operations but faces significant challenges regarding exam security (Oluwadare & Odeyemi, 2023). The implementation of AI-based identity verification could enhance the integrity of online exams by ensuring that students' identities are verified at every stage of the examination, making cheating more difficult (Adamu & Gado, 2023). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based identity verification in enhancing the security of online exams at the university.

Statement of the Problem
The shift to online examinations at Federal University, Lafia, has exposed the institution to various security vulnerabilities, particularly concerning identity verification. Traditional methods of identity verification, such as student ID checks and passwords, have proven to be inadequate in preventing impersonation and other forms of cheating (Musa & Bello, 2024). The university lacks an efficient and reliable system to ensure the authenticity of students during online assessments, which jeopardizes the credibility of the examination process. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of AI-based identity verification in securing online exams at Federal University, Lafia.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of AI-based identity verification systems in enhancing the security of online university examinations at Federal University, Lafia.

  2. To compare AI-based identity verification systems with traditional identity verification methods in terms of accuracy and reliability.

  3. To assess the impact of AI-based identity verification on reducing cheating and impersonation during online examinations at the university.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is AI-based identity verification in securing online university examinations at Federal University, Lafia?

  2. How does AI-based identity verification compare to traditional methods in terms of accuracy and reliability?

  3. What is the impact of AI-based identity verification on cheating and impersonation during online exams?

Research Hypotheses

  1. AI-based identity verification will significantly enhance the security of online university examinations at Federal University, Lafia.

  2. AI-based identity verification will provide more accurate and reliable identification compared to traditional methods.

  3. The implementation of AI-based identity verification will reduce the incidence of cheating and impersonation in online examinations at the university.

Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the role of AI in securing online university examinations. The findings could help Federal University, Lafia, and other universities improve the integrity and security of their online assessments, ensuring that academic standards are maintained in a virtual learning environment.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the implementation of AI-based identity verification systems in online exams at Federal University, Lafia, located in Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State. The study will be limited to undergraduate students, and the data will be collected from the university’s online examination records.

Definitions of Terms

  1. AI-Based Identity Verification: The use of AI technologies, such as facial recognition and voice recognition, to verify the identity of students during online exams.

  2. Online University Examinations: Examinations conducted over the internet, where students take tests remotely rather than in a physical exam hall.

  3. Impersonation: The act of someone other than the registered student taking an online examination on behalf of the student.
