Background of the Study
Certificate verification is an essential process in higher education, ensuring that university graduates possess the qualifications they claim. Traditionally, verification has relied on centralized databases and manual processes, which are prone to inefficiencies, fraud, and delays (Adams & Morris, 2024). In recent years, blockchain technology has emerged as a promising solution for securely storing and verifying data, including academic credentials. Blockchain offers decentralized, tamper-proof systems that provide an immutable record of academic achievements, thus ensuring the authenticity of certificates and reducing the risk of forgery (Nguyen & Miller, 2025).

Kano State University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State, offers an ideal context for exploring the integration of blockchain technology into certificate verification. By leveraging blockchain’s distributed ledger system, the university can provide a more efficient, transparent, and secure method of verifying academic credentials. The application of blockchain for academic certification has been trialed in several institutions globally, with positive results in reducing fraudulent activities and enhancing trust in academic qualifications (Schmidt & Patel, 2024). This study aims to design a blockchain-based certificate verification system for the university, which could be replicated in other institutions facing similar challenges.

Statement of the Problem
The current method of certificate verification at Kano State University of Science and Technology is vulnerable to fraud, delays, and administrative inefficiencies. Graduates often face long waiting periods for their credentials to be verified, while employers and institutions may struggle to verify certificates accurately and promptly (Johnson & Greene, 2023). This study addresses the problem of academic credential verification by proposing a blockchain-based system that can offer faster, more secure, and transparent verification processes, thereby mitigating the issues of fraud and inefficiency.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a blockchain-based certificate verification system for Kano State University of Science and Technology.

  2. To evaluate the potential benefits of using blockchain technology for certificate verification, including security, transparency, and efficiency.

  3. To assess the feasibility of implementing a blockchain-based verification system at the university and its scalability to other institutions.

Research Questions

  1. How can a blockchain-based certificate verification system enhance the security and transparency of academic credentials at Kano State University of Science and Technology?

  2. What are the benefits and challenges associated with implementing a blockchain-based certificate verification system in higher education?

  3. How feasible is it to implement a blockchain-based verification system at Kano State University of Science and Technology, and what challenges might arise?

Research Hypotheses

  1. A blockchain-based certificate verification system will provide greater security and transparency compared to traditional verification methods at Kano State University of Science and Technology.

  2. The implementation of a blockchain-based system will reduce the time and cost associated with certificate verification at the university.

  3. The adoption of blockchain technology for certificate verification will face technical, financial, and administrative challenges that may hinder its full implementation.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on the application of blockchain in education by providing practical insights into the design and implementation of a blockchain-based certificate verification system. The findings can guide other universities in adopting similar systems to improve the integrity of their academic processes and enhance the credibility of their graduates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Kano State University of Science and Technology in Wudil LGA, Kano State, and will examine the potential design and implementation of a blockchain-based certificate verification system. Limitations include the technological constraints of the blockchain system, potential resistance to change from university staff, and the limited scope of the study, which focuses only on certificate verification.

Definitions of Terms

  1. Blockchain Technology: A decentralized, distributed ledger system that securely records transactions or data across a network of computers, ensuring transparency and immutability.

  2. Certificate Verification: The process of authenticating academic credentials to confirm the validity of a degree or certificate issued by an educational institution.

  3. Decentralized Ledger: A type of database that is not controlled by a central authority, where records are distributed across multiple nodes or systems to ensure security and transparency.
