Background of the Study
Drug abuse is a major public health concern that has far-reaching consequences on both physical and mental health. In Taraba State, commercial motorcycle riders, or "okada" riders, represent a significant portion of the labor force. These riders often face high levels of stress due to long working hours, financial instability, and exposure to traffic accidents. To cope with these stressors, some individuals may turn to substance abuse, including alcohol, cannabis, and other illicit drugs, which can exacerbate mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and psychosis (Yakubu et al., 2024).
The mental health of commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State is of particular concern, as drug abuse is linked to a range of cognitive and emotional impairments. Drug use can impair judgment, increase aggressive behavior, and lead to a higher risk of mental health disorders. The consequences of these mental health challenges extend beyond the riders themselves, affecting their families, communities, and even their ability to perform their jobs safely. This study will examine the relationship between drug abuse and mental health problems among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State, exploring the types of substances used, the frequency of use, and the impact on mental well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Drug abuse is prevalent among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State, yet there is limited research on how substance use affects their mental health. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the impact of drug abuse on the mental health of motorcycle riders, identifying risk factors, and proposing interventions to address mental health challenges in this vulnerable group.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of drug abuse among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
2. To evaluate the impact of drug abuse on the mental health of commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
3. To identify the socio-economic and psychological factors that contribute to drug abuse among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of drug abuse among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State?
2. How does drug abuse affect the mental health of commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State?
3. What factors contribute to drug abuse among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Drug abuse is prevalent among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
2. Drug abuse is associated with increased rates of mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety, among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
3. Socio-economic stressors, peer pressure, and limited access to mental health care are significant factors contributing to drug abuse among commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on commercial motorcycle riders in Taraba State. Limitations include potential challenges in gathering sensitive data on drug abuse due to stigma, as well as logistical difficulties in accessing riders from remote areas.
