Background of the Study
University students in Sokoto State, like their counterparts worldwide, face a variety of mental health challenges, including academic stress, social pressures, and personal issues. These challenges can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions. University life is often associated with major life transitions, such as moving away from home, increased academic demands, and navigating new social environments. For many students, these changes can lead to increased stress and mental health concerns. Research suggests that students who experience stress without adequate coping mechanisms are at higher risk of developing mental health disorders (Jibril et al., 2023).
In Sokoto State, the university student population faces additional stressors such as economic hardship, limited access to mental health services, and societal stigma surrounding mental illness. These factors may hinder students' ability to seek help and utilize effective coping strategies. However, students often employ various coping mechanisms, including social support, religious practices, physical activity, and academic coping strategies. This study will appraise the coping mechanisms employed by university students in Sokoto State to manage mental health challenges, aiming to identify which strategies are most effective and how they can be supported by university programs.
Statement of the Problem
University students in Sokoto State experience mental health challenges but may lack the necessary coping mechanisms to manage stress and mental health conditions effectively. While students may employ various coping strategies, their effectiveness in promoting mental well-being has not been fully explored. This study seeks to evaluate the coping mechanisms used by students to address mental health challenges, providing insight into how these mechanisms can be supported and improved.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the coping mechanisms employed by university students in Sokoto State to manage mental health challenges.
2. To assess the effectiveness of these coping strategies in promoting mental well-being among students.
3. To recommend strategies for improving mental health support and coping mechanisms for students in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What coping mechanisms do university students in Sokoto State use to manage mental health challenges?
2. How effective are these coping mechanisms in promoting mental well-being among university students in Sokoto State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve mental health support and coping mechanisms for students in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. University students in Sokoto State employ a variety of coping mechanisms to manage mental health challenges.
2. Certain coping mechanisms, such as social support and religious practices, are more effective in promoting mental well-being among university students in Sokoto State.
3. Improvements in mental health support services will enhance the coping mechanisms and well-being of university students in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on university students in Sokoto State, assessing their mental health challenges and coping mechanisms. Limitations include the potential for response bias in self-reporting and challenges in measuring the effectiveness of coping strategies.
