Background of the Study
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the most significant risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and kidney failure. According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2024), hypertension affects approximately 1 in 4 adults globally, with a particularly high burden in developing countries, including Nigeria. In Sokoto State, the prevalence of hypertension has been rising steadily, with contributing factors such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, high stress, and limited access to healthcare services (Aliyu et al., 2023).
Exercise has long been recognized as an effective strategy for managing and preventing hypertension. Regular physical activity helps to lower blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health, and reduce the risks associated with hypertension-related complications (American Heart Association, 2024). However, in Sokoto State, as in many parts of Nigeria, there is limited public awareness about the benefits of exercise in managing hypertension. Furthermore, access to structured exercise programs or fitness facilities is limited in many rural areas, which can exacerbate the public health challenge.
This study aims to evaluate the role of exercise in managing hypertension among adults in Sokoto State, with particular focus on how regular physical activity can help lower blood pressure and improve health outcomes for hypertensive individuals.
Statement of the Problem
Hypertension is a major public health issue in Sokoto State, and despite the growing awareness of its dangers, the adoption of lifestyle modifications such as exercise remains low. There is a gap in understanding the extent to which exercise can help manage hypertension in Sokoto, particularly in the rural areas where healthcare resources are scarce. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of exercise in managing hypertension and offering evidence-based recommendations for public health interventions.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of hypertension in Sokoto State.
2. To examine the role of exercise in lowering blood pressure among hypertensive individuals in Sokoto State.
3. To recommend strategies for integrating exercise into the management of hypertension in Sokoto State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of hypertension among adults in Sokoto State?
2. How does regular exercise impact blood pressure levels in individuals with hypertension in Sokoto State?
3. What are the barriers to exercise participation for hypertensive individuals in Sokoto State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant relationship between regular exercise and reduced blood pressure levels among hypertensive individuals in Sokoto State.
2. Hypertensive individuals who engage in regular physical activity will experience better health outcomes compared to those who do not.
3. Socioeconomic and cultural factors significantly influence the adoption of exercise as a means of managing hypertension in Sokoto State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on adults living in Sokoto State and examine the role of exercise in managing hypertension. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting exercise habits, as well as difficulties in measuring the intensity and consistency of exercise among participants.
