Background of the Study

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health issue in Nigeria, including in Bauchi State, where the disease continues to affect a large portion of the population. Despite the availability of effective treatment through directly observed treatment short-course (DOTS) programs, many individuals fail to adhere to the full course of treatment, contributing to the persistence and spread of TB. Factors such as inadequate awareness about TB, stigma, and socio-economic barriers have been identified as major obstacles to treatment adherence. This study will assess the level of awareness about tuberculosis and the factors influencing treatment adherence in Bauchi State.

Statement of the Problem

Bauchi State faces a high burden of tuberculosis, but many individuals do not complete their prescribed treatment regimens. This non-adherence contributes to drug resistance and increases the risk of TB transmission. Public awareness about the importance of completing treatment and understanding TB prevention methods remains low in many parts of the state. This study aims to assess the level of awareness regarding tuberculosis in Bauchi State and explore factors that contribute to non-adherence to treatment, in order to improve TB control strategies.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of awareness of tuberculosis and its treatment in Bauchi State.

2. To examine factors influencing adherence to tuberculosis treatment in Bauchi State.

3. To identify strategies for improving treatment adherence and TB awareness in Bauchi State.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of public awareness about tuberculosis and its treatment in Bauchi State?

2. What are the factors that influence adherence to tuberculosis treatment in Bauchi State?

3. What interventions can be implemented to improve treatment adherence and TB awareness in Bauchi State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Low levels of tuberculosis awareness are significantly associated with poor adherence to treatment in Bauchi State.

2. Socio-economic factors, such as poverty and lack of access to healthcare, significantly influence treatment adherence among tuberculosis patients in Bauchi State.

3. Health education campaigns will significantly improve tuberculosis awareness and treatment adherence in Bauchi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on urban and rural populations in Bauchi State, particularly those affected by tuberculosis. Limitations may include difficulty in accessing rural areas and the potential for biases in self-reported adherence to treatment.

Definitions of Terms

• Tuberculosis (TB): A contagious bacterial infection primarily affecting the lungs, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

• Adherence to Treatment: The extent to which patients follow medical advice and complete their prescribed TB treatment regimen.

• DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Short-Course): A strategy used to ensure patients adhere to tuberculosis treatment by observing them take their medication.
