Background of the Study

Malaria remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, including Kano State. The Nigerian government, alongside international organizations, has implemented various malaria control strategies, such as the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs), indoor residual spraying (IRS), and antimalarial drug treatments. Despite these efforts, the burden of malaria remains high in Kano, with several challenges related to access to healthcare, environmental conditions, and public awareness. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of malaria control strategies in reducing malaria transmission and improving health outcomes in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

Although several malaria control measures have been introduced in Kano State, the prevalence of malaria remains high. Factors such as poor access to healthcare services, resistance to antimalarial drugs, and inadequate community engagement in malaria prevention measures contribute to the persistence of the disease. There is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of current malaria control strategies to identify gaps and propose solutions that can be scaled for better impact. This study aims to critically assess the success and limitations of these strategies in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) in reducing malaria incidence in Kano State.

2. To assess the level of community awareness and participation in malaria prevention programs in Kano State.

3. To identify challenges and barriers to effective malaria control and suggest recommendations for improvement in Kano State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are the malaria control strategies, such as ITNs and IRS, in reducing malaria transmission in Kano State?

2. What is the level of community knowledge and participation in malaria prevention programs in Kano State?

3. What are the barriers to effective malaria control in Kano State, and how can they be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

1. The use of insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) significantly reduces malaria incidence in Kano State.

2. Increased community participation in malaria prevention programs correlates with a decrease in malaria-related morbidity in Kano State.

3. The presence of malaria drug resistance and insufficient healthcare access are significant barriers to the effectiveness of malaria control strategies in Kano State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on urban and rural areas within Kano State, examining the implementation of malaria control strategies and their effectiveness in both settings. Limitations may include challenges in measuring community participation and potential biases in self-reported health data.

Definitions of Terms

• Malaria Control Strategies: Measures aimed at preventing the transmission of malaria, including the use of bed nets, spraying insecticides, and drug treatments.

• Insecticide-Treated Bed Nets (ITNs): Mosquito nets treated with insecticides to prevent mosquito bites and reduce malaria transmission.

• Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS): The application of insecticides on the walls and ceilings of homes to kill mosquitoes.
