Background of the Study

Household air pollution, primarily from the use of solid fuels such as firewood, coal, and biomass for cooking, is a significant public health issue in many developing countries, including Nigeria. In Katsina State, many households rely on solid fuels due to limited access to cleaner cooking technologies. The smoke emitted from these fuels contains harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds, which have been linked to various respiratory health issues, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. This study will investigate the impact of household air pollution from solid fuel use on respiratory health in Katsina State, focusing on the relationship between exposure to indoor air pollution and the prevalence of respiratory diseases among residents.

Statement of the Problem

The use of solid fuels for cooking in Katsina State is widespread, but there is a lack of comprehensive data on the health risks associated with indoor air pollution. Household air pollution is often overlooked as a significant risk factor for respiratory diseases, especially in rural areas where access to cleaner alternatives is limited. This study aims to assess the extent of exposure to household air pollution and its effect on respiratory health in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the levels of household air pollution from solid fuel use in Katsina State.

2. To examine the impact of household air pollution on respiratory health among residents of Katsina State.

3. To propose strategies for reducing household air pollution and mitigating its health effects in Katsina State.

Research Questions

1. What are the primary sources of household air pollution in Katsina State?

2. How does exposure to household air pollution from solid fuels affect respiratory health in Katsina State?

3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce household air pollution and improve respiratory health in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Household air pollution from solid fuel use is significantly associated with an increased prevalence of respiratory diseases in Katsina State.

2. The severity of respiratory health issues is directly related to the frequency and duration of exposure to household air pollution in Katsina State.

3. Implementing cleaner cooking technologies will lead to a reduction in respiratory diseases related to household air pollution in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on rural and urban households in Katsina State, assessing the levels of household air pollution and its impact on respiratory health. Limitations may include challenges in measuring indoor air pollution levels accurately and the potential for recall bias in health data reporting.

Definitions of Terms

• Household Air Pollution: The pollution of indoor air from the burning of solid fuels such as wood, coal, or biomass for cooking and heating.

• Respiratory Health: The health status of the respiratory system, including diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and COPD.

• Solid Fuels: Fuels derived from organic materials, including wood, coal, and agricultural residues, used for cooking and heating.
