Poor sanitation is a significant public health concern, especially in areas with inadequate access to clean water and proper waste disposal systems. Waterborne diseases, such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in developing countries, including Nigeria. In Kaduna State, rapid urbanization and rural development have led to challenges in maintaining proper sanitation facilities, resulting in contamination of drinking water sources and an increase in waterborne diseases. Inadequate sewage systems, improper waste disposal, and a lack of hygiene awareness among residents exacerbate the problem. This study aims to investigate the relationship between poor sanitation and the prevalence of waterborne diseases in Kaduna State, focusing on how these factors contribute to public health issues in urban and rural areas.
Despite efforts to improve sanitation in Kaduna State, poor sanitation remains a pressing issue, especially in underserved communities. The direct consequence of inadequate sanitation is the contamination of water sources, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases. These diseases disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. The rising incidence of waterborne diseases calls for a thorough investigation of sanitation practices and their impact on public health, in order to devise more effective public health interventions.
This study will focus on both urban and rural communities in Kaduna State, assessing sanitation practices and the incidence of waterborne diseases in these areas. Limitations include potential challenges in accessing remote rural communities for data collection and obtaining accurate health data due to reporting gaps in some areas.
