Background of the Study

Smoking is a well-established risk factor for a range of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including coronary artery disease, stroke, and heart failure. In Niger State, smoking prevalence among male adults remains a significant public health concern, despite various public health campaigns targeting tobacco use. The toxic substances in tobacco smoke, such as nicotine, carbon monoxide, and various carcinogens, contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, the narrowing of blood vessels, and the increased risk of myocardial infarction. This study seeks to explore the extent to which smoking contributes to heart disease among male adults in Niger State, highlighting the relationship between smoking behaviors and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases.

Statement of the Problem

Heart disease continues to be one of the leading causes of death in Niger State, and smoking is a major modifiable risk factor that exacerbates this health burden. Despite knowledge of the health risks associated with smoking, there is limited research specifically assessing the link between smoking and heart disease in the male population of Niger State. This study will provide insight into the impact of smoking on heart disease and the need for targeted interventions to reduce smoking-related health issues in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the relationship between smoking and heart disease among male adults in Niger State.
  2. To assess the prevalence of smoking among male adults and its association with cardiovascular disease risk.
  3. To recommend strategies for reducing smoking-related cardiovascular health risks among male adults in Niger State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between smoking and heart disease among male adults in Niger State?
  2. How does smoking contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases in male adults in Niger State?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce smoking-related heart disease in Niger State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Smoking is significantly associated with an increased risk of heart disease among male adults in Niger State.
  2. The prevalence of smoking is higher among male adults with heart disease in Niger State compared to those without.
  3. Smoking cessation programs will significantly reduce the incidence of heart disease among male adults in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on male adults aged 18 and above residing in both urban and rural areas of Niger State. Limitations may include the difficulty in accurately assessing smoking behaviors due to self-reporting biases and the challenge of isolating smoking as the sole contributor to heart disease, given the presence of other risk factors such as diet and physical inactivity.

Definitions of Terms

  • Smoking: The act of inhaling and exhaling the smoke of tobacco or other substances, typically through cigarettes, cigars, or pipes.
  • Heart Disease: A range of conditions affecting the heart, including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and heart failure.
  • Atherosclerosis: The buildup of fatty deposits in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease.
