Background of the Study

Access to HIV treatment, including antiretroviral therapy (ART), is crucial for improving the health of people living with HIV and preventing transmission. However, in Katsina State, numerous barriers limit the uptake of HIV treatment, including stigma, lack of awareness, and cultural factors that discourage individuals from seeking treatment. These barriers contribute to late diagnoses, delayed initiation of ART, and lower rates of adherence. This study seeks to identify the key barriers preventing individuals from accessing and adhering to HIV treatment in Katsina State, with the goal of informing strategies to overcome these obstacles and improve treatment uptake.

Statement of the Problem

Although ART is available in Katsina State, many individuals living with HIV do not access treatment, or they delay seeking care, which can lead to worsened health outcomes and increased transmission risks. Stigma, fear of discrimination, and a lack of understanding about the benefits of ART contribute to these barriers. Additionally, inadequate healthcare infrastructure and poor healthcare provider attitudes may further hinder treatment uptake. This study will investigate these barriers to HIV treatment uptake and provide recommendations for improving access to HIV treatment services in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the barriers preventing individuals from accessing HIV treatment in Katsina State.
  2. To assess the role of stigma and cultural factors in hindering HIV treatment uptake in Katsina State.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of current interventions aimed at improving HIV treatment uptake in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary barriers to HIV treatment uptake in Katsina State?
  2. How do stigma and cultural beliefs influence individuals’ decisions to seek HIV treatment in Katsina State?
  3. How effective are current interventions in improving HIV treatment uptake in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Stigma and cultural beliefs are significant barriers to HIV treatment uptake in Katsina State.
  2. Lack of healthcare access and poor infrastructure contribute to delays in HIV treatment initiation in Katsina State.
  3. Interventions aimed at reducing stigma and increasing HIV awareness improve treatment uptake in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on individuals who have been diagnosed with HIV but have not started or adhered to ART in Katsina State. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting due to stigma and reluctance to disclose treatment barriers.

Definitions of Terms
