Background of the Study

Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for obesity, particularly among adolescents. In Niger State, as in other parts of Nigeria, there has been a marked decline in physical activity among young people, often due to factors such as increased screen time, lack of recreational facilities, and urbanization. Obesity during adolescence is a significant public health concern, as it is associated with various health complications such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and psychological issues. The prevalence of obesity in Nigerian adolescents has been rising in recent years, and physical inactivity is one of the key contributors to this increase. This study seeks to examine the relationship between physical inactivity and obesity levels among adolescents in Niger State, considering factors such as lifestyle, diet, and socioeconomic status.

Statement of the Problem

The prevalence of physical inactivity and obesity is on the rise among adolescents in Niger State, with potential long-term health consequences. Adolescents are increasingly engaging in sedentary behaviors, such as watching television and playing video games, and have limited participation in physical activities. This study seeks to assess the impact of physical inactivity on obesity levels among adolescents in Niger State and to explore potential interventions that could reduce the rates of obesity and associated health risks.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of physical inactivity and obesity among adolescents in Niger State.
  2. To determine the relationship between physical inactivity and obesity levels in adolescents in Niger State.
  3. To recommend strategies for increasing physical activity and reducing obesity rates among adolescents in Niger State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of physical inactivity and obesity among adolescents in Niger State?
  2. How does physical inactivity contribute to obesity levels among adolescents in Niger State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to increase physical activity and reduce obesity among adolescents in Niger State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Physical inactivity is significantly associated with higher obesity levels among adolescents in Niger State.
  2. Adolescents who engage in physical activities have lower obesity levels than those who are physically inactive in Niger State.
  3. Interventions such as school-based physical activity programs will reduce obesity rates among adolescents in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on adolescents in Niger State, particularly those in secondary schools. It will assess their levels of physical activity, obesity prevalence, and contributing factors. Limitations include the challenge of accurately assessing physical activity levels and reliance on self-reported data, which may be biased.

Definitions of Terms

  • Physical Inactivity: A lack of physical activity, typically defined as less than 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week.
  • Obesity: A condition characterized by excessive body fat, typically measured by a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher.
  • Adolescents: Individuals aged between 10 and 19 years.
