Background of the Study

Socio-economic factors such as income, education, occupation, and access to healthcare services have a profound influence on health behaviors, including vaccination rates. In Kaduna State, disparities in socio-economic conditions contribute to variations in childhood immunization coverage across different communities. Families with higher income and education levels tend to have better access to healthcare services and are more likely to vaccinate their children (Ogunjimi et al., 2023). Conversely, families in lower socio-economic brackets often face barriers to immunization, including financial constraints, lack of awareness, and limited access to healthcare facilities. This study aims to explore how socio-economic factors influence childhood immunization rates in Kaduna State, with the goal of identifying ways to reduce disparities and improve immunization coverage.

Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to increase immunization rates in Kaduna State, significant disparities in vaccination coverage persist between different socio-economic groups. Lower-income families, especially in rural areas, are less likely to vaccinate their children due to a combination of financial, informational, and logistical barriers. This study seeks to examine the socio-economic determinants of immunization uptake and to identify ways to address these challenges to improve overall vaccination coverage.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the influence of socio-economic factors on childhood immunization rates in Kaduna State.
  2. To identify socio-economic disparities in immunization coverage across different communities in Kaduna State.
  3. To recommend interventions to increase immunization rates among socio-economically disadvantaged populations in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What socio-economic factors influence childhood immunization rates in Kaduna State?
  2. How do socio-economic disparities affect immunization coverage in different communities in Kaduna State?
  3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce socio-economic disparities in immunization coverage in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher socio-economic status is associated with higher immunization rates in Kaduna State.
  2. Socio-economic disparities contribute significantly to variations in immunization coverage in Kaduna State.
  3. Targeted interventions aimed at low-income communities will reduce socio-economic disparities in immunization rates.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on both urban and rural areas of Kaduna State, examining socio-economic factors such as income, education, and occupation, and how they affect childhood immunization rates. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate socio-economic data and potential resistance to participation from socio-economically disadvantaged populations.

Definitions of Terms
