Background of the Study

The use of pesticides in agriculture is a common practice aimed at controlling pests and increasing crop yields in Nigeria. However, the residual effects of pesticides on food safety are of growing concern, especially in states like Taraba, which has an active agricultural sector. Pesticides such as organophosphates, carbamates, and pyrethroids, while effective in pest control, can leave harmful residues on food crops if not used correctly (Aliyu & Umar, 2024). Consumption of food contaminated with pesticide residues has been linked to various health issues, including acute poisoning, cancer, and long-term neurological effects. Despite the widespread use of pesticides, there is limited research on the levels of pesticide residues in food crops grown in Taraba State and their potential health risks to consumers. This study aims to assess the levels of pesticide residues in food crops grown in Taraba State and evaluate the impact on food safety.

Statement of the Problem

The presence of pesticide residues in food poses significant health risks to consumers, particularly in agricultural regions like Taraba State. While the use of pesticides is essential for maintaining crop health and food security, improper application and lack of proper regulation have led to pesticide contamination of food. There is limited research on the levels of pesticide residues in food crops and their potential health impact on consumers in Taraba State, necessitating an investigation into the effect of pesticide residues on food safety in the region.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the levels of pesticide residues in food crops grown in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the impact of pesticide residues on food safety and public health in Taraba State.
  3. To recommend strategies for reducing pesticide residue contamination in food crops in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the levels of pesticide residues found in food crops grown in Taraba State?
  2. How do pesticide residues affect food safety and public health in Taraba State?
  3. What measures can be implemented to reduce pesticide residues in food crops in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The levels of pesticide residues in food crops grown in Taraba State exceed the acceptable safety limits.
  2. Pesticide residues in food crops pose significant risks to public health in Taraba State.
  3. Reducing pesticide use and implementing better regulatory practices will lower the levels of pesticide residues in food crops in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on food crops grown in major agricultural areas of Taraba State. The scope includes measuring pesticide residue levels and assessing the potential health risks posed to consumers. Limitations may include challenges in accessing farms and markets for sample collection, as well as difficulties in obtaining reliable data on pesticide usage.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pesticide Residues: Traces of pesticides left on food crops after application, which may pose health risks when consumed.
  • Food Safety: The practice of handling, preparing, and storing food in ways that prevent contamination and ensure public health.
  • Public Health: The health and well-being of a population, particularly in relation to foodborne illnesses and environmental hazards.
