Background of the Study

Climate change is a driving force behind the displacement of populations, especially in regions that experience extreme weather conditions such as droughts, floods, and rising temperatures. In Sokoto State, a region known for its semi-arid climate, the effects of climate change have led to significant challenges in agriculture, water availability, and overall livelihoods (Suleiman & Abubakar, 2024). As a result, many residents have been forced to migrate to urban areas or other states in search of better living conditions, often facing poor sanitation, overcrowding, and limited access to healthcare in their new environments. This climate-induced migration can exacerbate public health issues, as displaced populations are at higher risk for diseases such as cholera, malaria, and malnutrition.

This study will investigate the relationship between climate change-related migration and the public health consequences for both migrants and host communities in Sokoto State, aiming to highlight the specific health challenges posed by migration as a result of climate change.

Statement of the Problem

Climate change-related migration has become a growing concern in Sokoto State, with displaced populations facing serious public health risks. However, there is limited research on the direct health consequences of this migration, especially for migrants who are moving to urban centers with already strained healthcare resources. This study seeks to evaluate the health implications of climate-induced migration and how it affects both the migrants and the host communities in Sokoto State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the causes and patterns of climate change-related migration in Sokoto State.
  2. To assess the public health consequences of migration on both displaced populations and host communities.
  3. To propose interventions to address the public health challenges associated with climate change-related migration.

Research Questions

  1. What are the causes and patterns of climate change-related migration in Sokoto State?
  2. How does climate change-related migration impact the health of both migrants and host communities in Sokoto State?
  3. What health interventions can be implemented to mitigate the public health consequences of climate change-related migration?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Climate change-related migration in Sokoto State is primarily driven by extreme weather events such as droughts and food insecurity.
  2. Migrants in Sokoto State experience higher rates of communicable diseases and mental health issues compared to residents of host communities.
  3. Implementing healthcare infrastructure improvements and providing health services to migrants will reduce the public health risks associated with climate change-related migration in Sokoto State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on climate change-related migration in Sokoto State, specifically examining the health impacts on both migrants and host communities over the past five years. Limitations include challenges in accurately tracing migration patterns and isolating climate change as the sole factor contributing to migration.

Definitions of Terms

  • Climate Change-Related Migration: The movement of populations due to environmental changes caused by climate change, such as droughts, floods, and other extreme weather events.
  • Public Health Consequences: The health impacts on individuals and communities, including the spread of diseases, mental health issues, and access to healthcare.
  • Sokoto State: A state in northwestern Nigeria that experiences desertification, droughts, and other climate-induced challenges.
