Air pollution, a direct result of urbanization and industrialization, is a major environmental concern in many urban centers in Nigeria, including Kaduna State. The rapid increase in the number of vehicles, industrial emissions, and poor waste management has contributed to elevated levels of pollutants in the air, such as particulate matter (PM), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). These pollutants are known to have detrimental effects on human health, particularly on the respiratory system. In regions like Kaduna State, where urban centers are growing rapidly, air pollution has been linked to increased rates of respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchitis, and even lung cancer (Ibrahim & Okoro, 2024).
This study will explore the relationship between air pollution and the prevalence of respiratory illnesses in the urban areas of Kaduna State, providing important data for public health interventions and policies aimed at reducing air pollution and its health effects.
Urban air pollution is increasingly recognized as a major public health threat in Kaduna State, yet the full extent of its impact on respiratory health remains under-explored. Respiratory illnesses are on the rise, with reports suggesting that air pollution is contributing to this increase. However, there is a lack of comprehensive research that specifically links the levels of air pollution in Kaduna's urban centers with the incidence and severity of respiratory diseases. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating how air pollution influences respiratory illnesses in the region.
This study will focus on the urban centers within Kaduna State, specifically assessing air pollution levels and their impact on respiratory health in the past five years. Limitations may include challenges in measuring and controlling for all factors that influence respiratory health, as well as possible inaccuracies in self-reported health data from participants.
