Desertification, the process of land degradation due to various factors including climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land use, is a growing concern in northern Nigeria, particularly in Yobe State. This process results in the loss of fertile soil, reduced vegetation, and a dramatic decrease in the availability of fresh water sources. As desertification progresses, it severely affects access to potable water, exacerbating health challenges in communities already facing poverty, lack of infrastructure, and climate stress (Okonkwo & Musa, 2024). The scarcity of clean water often leads to a rise in waterborne diseases and other health complications such as dehydration, malnutrition, and skin infections.
This study will investigate how desertification in Yobe State affects the availability of potable water and its subsequent impact on public health, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.
Desertification in Yobe State has led to the depletion of water sources, making access to potable water increasingly difficult for the population. This scarcity directly impacts the health of residents, leading to an increase in waterborne diseases and dehydration. However, there is limited research on the direct link between desertification and water scarcity, particularly regarding health outcomes in Yobe State. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring the effect of desertification on access to potable water and its health consequences.
This study will focus on the effect of desertification on water availability and health outcomes in Yobe State over the past decade. Limitations include potential difficulties in quantifying the exact impact of desertification on water resources and health, as well as the challenge of addressing broader socio-economic factors that contribute to water scarcity.
