Background of the Study

Quantum computing is an emerging field with the potential to transform industries ranging from healthcare to finance, logistics, and telecommunications. As quantum computing advances, universities worldwide are investing in research and infrastructure to stay at the forefront of this revolutionary technology. However, in Nigeria, the adoption of quantum computing research is still in its infancy, with many universities lagging behind in terms of infrastructure, research expertise, and funding.

The University of Abuja, located in the Federal Capital Territory, has the potential to play a pivotal role in the development of quantum computing research in Nigeria. However, it is essential to assess the university's current readiness in terms of resources, academic programs, research collaboration, and faculty expertise to determine its capacity to foster cutting-edge quantum computing research. By evaluating the university’s preparedness, this study aims to provide insights into the opportunities and challenges that Nigerian universities face in embracing quantum computing.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the promising potential of quantum computing to revolutionize various sectors in Nigeria, universities in the country face significant challenges in integrating quantum computing into their research programs. These challenges include inadequate infrastructure, limited access to quantum computing hardware and software, and a lack of specialized faculty and research funding. The University of Abuja, while one of Nigeria's prominent institutions, may face similar barriers in establishing a strong quantum computing research program.

The challenge is to assess whether the University of Abuja is adequately prepared for quantum computing research, both in terms of physical infrastructure and academic readiness. Additionally, it is crucial to examine how the university can overcome the barriers to establishing a robust quantum computing research framework that can contribute to national development.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the readiness of the University of Abuja for quantum computing research in terms of infrastructure, faculty expertise, and academic programs.

  2. To identify the challenges faced by Nigerian universities, particularly the University of Abuja, in establishing quantum computing research programs.

  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the readiness of Nigerian universities to foster quantum computing research.

Research Questions

  1. What is the current state of quantum computing research infrastructure at the University of Abuja?

  2. What are the challenges faced by the University of Abuja in establishing a quantum computing research program?

  3. How can Nigerian universities, particularly the University of Abuja, improve their readiness for quantum computing research?

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it will provide valuable insights into the readiness of Nigerian universities, particularly the University of Abuja, to embrace quantum computing research. The findings can help guide policymakers, university administrators, and researchers in addressing gaps in infrastructure, training, and funding. Furthermore, it will contribute to the broader discourse on the state of quantum computing education and research in Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the University of Abuja in the Federal Capital Territory and will not extend to other universities in Nigeria. Limitations include the availability of data on quantum computing research infrastructure and the challenges associated with gathering accurate information on academic readiness within the university.
