Background of the Study

Climate change poses a substantial risk to public health, especially in areas like Taraba State, where agricultural activities, water resources, and vulnerable populations are directly impacted by climate variability. The government’s role in formulating policies that address both climate change mitigation and the protection of public health is crucial in managing the challenges posed by rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events (Eze & Ibraheem, 2024). However, the effectiveness of these policies in improving public health outcomes is largely unknown, particularly in Taraba State, where climate change impacts have been less studied.

This study will critically assess the existing government policies aimed at addressing climate change and its effects on public health in Taraba State. The goal is to evaluate whether these policies effectively reduce the adverse health outcomes of climate change and propose recommendations for strengthening climate-health governance.

Statement of the Problem

While the Nigerian government has developed several policies to address climate change and public health, the implementation and effectiveness of these policies in Taraba State remain unclear. The state faces challenges such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, limited public awareness, and the lack of coordinated policy implementation. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness of government policies in mitigating the health impacts of climate change in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of government policies on climate change and public health in Taraba State.
  2. To identify gaps in policy implementation and the challenges faced by the state in addressing climate-related health risks.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the policy framework and enhancing public health protection in response to climate change.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are government policies on climate change and public health in Taraba State?
  2. What challenges do policymakers face in implementing climate change and public health policies in Taraba State?
  3. What policy strategies can improve public health outcomes in Taraba State in response to climate change?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Government policies on climate change and public health in Taraba State have limited effectiveness in addressing health risks.
  2. There are significant barriers to the implementation of climate change policies related to public health in Taraba State.
  3. Improved policy coordination and public awareness can lead to better health outcomes in Taraba State in the face of climate change.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on policies related to climate change and public health in Taraba State, with particular attention to agricultural and water-related health risks. Limitations include potential difficulties in accessing policy documents and gauging the actual impact of these policies on health outcomes due to a lack of robust data.
