Background of the Study

Marital conflicts are a common source of emotional distress and can significantly impact mental well-being. Women, particularly in developing regions like Gombe State, are often more vulnerable to the negative mental health effects of marital disputes due to societal roles, economic dependence, and cultural expectations. Conflicts within marriage have been linked to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and even physical health issues (Suleiman & Lawal, 2023).

In Gombe State, many women face challenges in marriage due to socio-economic pressure, lack of access to education, and the persistence of traditional gender roles. These challenges can exacerbate mental health issues during periods of marital discord. Understanding how marital conflict impacts women’s mental health is crucial for developing interventions that support women’s psychological well-being. This study aims to assess the effects of marital conflicts on mental well-being among women in Gombe State.

Statement of the Problem

Marital conflict is a known contributor to mental health issues, particularly among women. However, there is limited research on how marital disputes affect women’s mental health specifically in Gombe State. Given the gendered nature of marital relationships and the socio-cultural pressures faced by women in the state, this study aims to explore the psychological toll of marital conflicts on women’s well-being and the coping strategies they employ.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between marital conflicts and mental health disorders among women in Gombe State.
  2. To assess the psychological impact of marital disputes, including depression and anxiety, on women.
  3. To identify support systems and coping mechanisms women rely on to manage the psychological effects of marital conflicts.

Research Questions

  1. How do marital conflicts affect the mental well-being of women in Gombe State?
  2. What are the prevalent mental health disorders among women experiencing marital conflicts in Gombe State?
  3. What coping strategies do women employ to manage the mental health effects of marital conflicts in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Marital conflict is significantly associated with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety among women in Gombe State.
  2. Women who experience marital conflict in Gombe State report higher levels of stress and anxiety compared to those in stable marriages.
  3. Coping mechanisms such as social support and counseling reduce the negative mental health effects of marital conflicts on women.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on women in Gombe State who have experienced marital conflict within the past five years. Limitations include challenges in obtaining sensitive information regarding marital disputes and potential bias in self-reported mental health outcomes.
