Background of the Study

Mental health awareness and stigma play a critical role in the recognition and treatment of mental health issues. In Katsina State, where traditional views and cultural practices often stigmatize mental health conditions, secondary school teachers may have limited awareness of mental health issues among their students and themselves. Teachers are frequently the first to notice changes in behavior that could indicate mental health problems but may lack the knowledge or resources to address them (Aliyu & Tanimu, 2023).

In many African settings, mental health stigma is a barrier to seeking help and can lead to neglect and poor mental health outcomes. While awareness of mental health issues is increasing globally, the stigma associated with these conditions remains pervasive, especially in educational environments where mental health awareness and teacher training programs are often limited. This study examines the level of mental health awareness among secondary school teachers in Katsina State and explores the impact of stigma on mental health management.

Statement of the Problem

Mental health issues are a growing concern among adolescents in secondary schools, but teachers in Katsina State may lack sufficient awareness and understanding of these issues. The stigma surrounding mental health conditions further exacerbates this challenge, preventing teachers from identifying and addressing students' needs appropriately. This study investigates the level of mental health awareness among secondary school teachers in Katsina State and assesses the role of stigma in preventing effective mental health support for students.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of mental health awareness among secondary school teachers in Katsina State.
  2. To evaluate the extent to which stigma affects teachers' ability to identify and address mental health issues among students.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving mental health awareness and reducing stigma in secondary schools.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of mental health awareness among secondary school teachers in Katsina State?
  2. How does mental health stigma affect teachers' ability to support students with mental health issues?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve mental health awareness and reduce stigma in secondary schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Secondary school teachers in Katsina State have low levels of mental health awareness.
  2. Mental health stigma negatively affects teachers' ability to support students with mental health issues.
  3. Implementing training programs will improve mental health awareness and reduce stigma among teachers.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on secondary school teachers in Katsina State, assessing their knowledge of mental health issues and the impact of stigma. Limitations include the potential for self-reporting bias and the challenge of reaching a representative sample of teachers across both urban and rural schools.

Definitions of Terms

  • Stigma: Negative attitudes, beliefs, and stereotypes associated with mental health conditions that discourage seeking help.
  • Secondary School Teachers: Educators responsible for teaching students in the second level of education, typically aged 12-18 years.
