Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yobe State, a region significantly affected by armed conflict and insurgency, are at high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The psychological impact of displacement, loss of homes, and exposure to violence can result in lasting trauma that affects an individual’s mental health and well-being (Nuhu et al., 2023). PTSD is a severe mental health condition that often leads to debilitating symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and emotional numbing, severely affecting daily functioning.
In Nigeria, particularly in regions like Yobe State, the mental health needs of IDPs are often underaddressed due to limited healthcare access, stigma surrounding mental health issues, and a lack of trained mental health professionals. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and impact of PTSD among IDPs in Yobe State and assess the adequacy of existing support mechanisms for those affected.
PTSD among IDPs in Yobe State has become a pressing mental health issue, with many individuals experiencing severe psychological distress as a result of their displacement. Despite the widespread recognition of the issue, access to appropriate mental health care and support remains inadequate. The displacement and ongoing conflict have further complicated efforts to provide effective mental health interventions, leaving many individuals untreated and vulnerable. This study explores the prevalence, causes, and effects of PTSD among IDPs and evaluates existing support structures.
This study will focus on IDPs residing in camps and host communities within Yobe State. The limitations include the difficulty of assessing PTSD in populations with limited access to mental health professionals and the potential for underreporting due to stigma and fear of seeking treatment.
