University students often face various stressors, such as academic pressure, social challenges, and the transition to adulthood, all of which can contribute to the development of mental health issues like depression. In Borno State, a region affected by conflict and displacement, students may face additional challenges, including trauma, loss, and insecurity, which exacerbate mental health struggles. Family support is a key factor in managing depression, as emotional and financial support from family members can buffer the adverse effects of stress (Yusuf & Ali, 2023).
The role of family in mental health care is particularly crucial in contexts where formal mental health services are limited or stigmatized. Family members can provide emotional care, encourage seeking professional help, and offer practical support. This study investigates the influence of family support in managing depression among university students in Borno State, with a focus on the specific challenges faced by students in conflict-affected areas.
Depression is a significant mental health concern among university students in Borno State, with many students experiencing academic and personal stress. Despite the availability of family support, the extent to which families can positively influence depression management has not been adequately explored. There is also a gap in understanding how the ongoing conflict and displacement in the region affect the ability of families to provide this support. This study seeks to explore the relationship between family support and the management of depression among university students in Borno State.
The study will focus on university students in Borno State, specifically assessing the role of family support in managing depression. Limitations include the potential for self-reporting bias and the challenge of generalizing findings due to the specific context of conflict and displacement in the region.
