Background of the Study

Stress is a prevalent issue among university students, driven by academic pressures, financial constraints, social challenges, and uncertainties about future careers. Prolonged exposure to stress can have severe consequences on students' mental and physical health, academic performance, and overall quality of life. In Plateau State, where universities cater to a diverse population of students, unique socio-economic and cultural dynamics further complicate the stress landscape (Adeoye & Obinna, 2023).

Coping mechanisms, whether adaptive or maladaptive, play a critical role in managing stress and its effects. Adaptive mechanisms such as problem-solving, seeking social support, and time management help students mitigate stress effectively, while maladaptive mechanisms like substance abuse and avoidance exacerbate mental health challenges. Despite the growing recognition of student stress as a public health concern, little research has focused on how students in Plateau State cope with stress and how these coping mechanisms influence their well-being.

Statement of the Problem

University students in Plateau State face increasing levels of stress due to academic demands, limited financial resources, and socio-political instability in the region. This stress negatively impacts their academic performance, mental health, and social relationships. While some students adopt effective coping strategies, others resort to maladaptive behaviors that worsen their challenges.

There is a lack of comprehensive research on the types of stressors affecting students in Plateau State and the coping mechanisms they employ. Without this knowledge, universities and policymakers are unable to design targeted interventions to support students. This study aims to examine the impact of stress on university students in Plateau State and evaluate the effectiveness of their coping strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the primary sources of stress among university students in Plateau State.
  2. To evaluate the coping mechanisms employed by students to manage stress.
  3. To analyze the relationship between stress levels, coping mechanisms, and mental health outcomes.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main sources of stress affecting university students in Plateau State?
  2. What coping mechanisms do students use to manage stress?
  3. How do stress levels and coping strategies impact the mental health of students?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Academic demands and financial constraints are significant sources of stress among university students in Plateau State.
  2. Students who use adaptive coping mechanisms experience better mental health outcomes compared to those who use maladaptive strategies.
  3. Effective coping mechanisms significantly mitigate the negative impact of stress on students' academic performance and well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on undergraduate students in public and private universities in Plateau State, examining their sources of stress, coping strategies, and mental health outcomes. Limitations include potential underreporting of stress levels and coping behaviors due to social desirability bias and the exclusion of postgraduate students from the study.

Definitions of Terms

  • Coping Mechanisms: Strategies or behaviors employed to manage stress and its associated effects.
  • Adaptive Coping Mechanisms: Positive strategies, such as problem-solving and seeking social support, that reduce stress and improve well-being.
