Social support networks play a crucial role in promoting mental health and resilience. These networks, which include family, friends, peers, and community organizations, provide emotional, psychological, and practical assistance during times of stress. Research has shown that strong social support networks are associated with lower rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders (Uwakwe & Ekeh, 2023). In Kano State, a predominantly urban and culturally diverse region of Nigeria, the significance of social support in mitigating mental health challenges cannot be overstated.
Kano State faces various socio-economic and health challenges, including unemployment, poverty, and limited access to mental health services. In such a context, social support networks often serve as informal safety nets that help individuals navigate these stressors. However, these networks may vary in strength and effectiveness due to factors such as urbanization, cultural shifts, and economic hardship. This study investigates the relationship between social support networks and mental health outcomes in Kano State, highlighting their importance in mental health promotion and recovery.
Despite the critical role of social support networks in enhancing mental health outcomes, many individuals in Kano State lack access to robust and reliable support systems. Urbanization and economic pressures have contributed to the weakening of traditional family structures, leaving many residents vulnerable to mental health challenges. Additionally, formal mental health services remain underdeveloped, further increasing reliance on informal support networks.
However, the extent to which social support networks influence mental health outcomes in Kano State remains underexplored. Understanding this relationship is essential for designing culturally appropriate interventions that strengthen these networks and improve mental health outcomes. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the effectiveness of social support networks in promoting mental health in Kano State.
The study focuses on residents of Kano State, with particular attention to individuals experiencing mental health challenges. It explores the availability, strength, and impact of social support networks while identifying barriers to their effectiveness. Limitations include potential variability in participants' definitions of social support and challenges in quantifying the subjective aspects of support networks.
