Background of the Study

In many parts of Nigeria, access to clean and safe drinking water remains a major public health challenge. Household water treatment practices have been promoted as an effective way to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, especially in areas where access to treated municipal water is limited. In Kwara State, various household water treatment methods, such as boiling, filtration, and chemical disinfection, are employed by residents to ensure the safety of their drinking water. However, the effectiveness of these practices in reducing waterborne diseases and their sustainability in the long term have not been thoroughly evaluated.

This study seeks to assess the household water treatment practices in Kwara State, focusing on their effectiveness, adoption rates, and challenges faced by households in maintaining safe water practices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of various household water treatment methods, many residents in Kwara State still suffer from waterborne diseases. Factors such as inconsistent use of treatment methods, lack of awareness, and the high cost of treatment materials contribute to the continued prevalence of waterborne diseases. This study will examine the effectiveness of household water treatment practices in Kwara State and explore the factors that influence their adoption and success.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of household water treatment practices in preventing waterborne diseases in Kwara State.
  2. To assess the level of awareness and adoption of household water treatment methods among residents of Kwara State.
  3. To identify challenges faced by households in consistently using water treatment methods.

Research Questions

  1. What are the most common household water treatment practices in Kwara State, and how effective are they in preventing waterborne diseases?
  2. What factors influence the adoption of household water treatment practices in Kwara State?
  3. What challenges do households face in consistently applying water treatment practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Household water treatment practices significantly reduce the incidence of waterborne diseases in Kwara State.
  2. Higher levels of awareness about waterborne diseases and treatment methods are associated with increased adoption of water treatment practices in Kwara State.
  3. Economic and logistical factors hinder the consistent use of household water treatment methods in Kwara State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on evaluating household water treatment practices in both urban and rural communities across Kwara State. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate data on waterborne disease incidence and self-reported water treatment behaviors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Household Water Treatment: Methods employed by individuals or families to treat water at the point of use, including boiling, filtration, and chemical disinfection.
  • Waterborne Diseases: Diseases caused by consuming contaminated water, such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
  • Point-of-Use Treatment: Water treatment practices that occur at the household level, as opposed to centralized water treatment systems.
