Background of the Study

Local governments play a crucial role in the provision and maintenance of sanitation infrastructure, which directly impacts public health. In Gombe State, like many parts of Nigeria, the local government is responsible for ensuring that sanitation services, such as waste collection, wastewater management, and the construction of public toilets, are adequately provided. However, in many areas, inadequate funding, poor coordination, and a lack of political will have led to deficiencies in sanitation infrastructure, contributing to the spread of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and diarrhea.

This study aims to evaluate the role of local government in improving sanitation infrastructure in Gombe State, exploring the effectiveness of current efforts, the challenges faced by local governments, and the potential for improved coordination and resource allocation to enhance public health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

Sanitation infrastructure in Gombe State is often insufficient, with many communities lacking proper waste management systems, safe drinking water, and sanitation facilities. Although local government agencies are mandated to address these issues, the implementation of effective sanitation programs has been hindered by limited resources, poor governance, and inadequate public awareness. This study will investigate the role of local government in improving sanitation infrastructure and its impact on public health in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of local government in the provision of sanitation infrastructure in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of local government programs in improving public health through better sanitation.
  3. To identify challenges faced by local governments in implementing sanitation initiatives and provide recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. What is the role of local government in improving sanitation infrastructure in Gombe State?
  2. How effective are local government sanitation programs in improving public health in Gombe State?
  3. What challenges do local governments face in providing sanitation infrastructure, and how can these challenges be addressed?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Local government programs focused on sanitation infrastructure significantly improve public health outcomes in Gombe State.
  2. Increased funding and political commitment to sanitation infrastructure by local government lead to better sanitation conditions in Gombe State.
  3. Lack of coordination between local government agencies and the community hinders the effective implementation of sanitation programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of local government in improving sanitation infrastructure in urban and rural areas of Gombe State. Limitations may include difficulties in assessing the full impact of sanitation programs due to long-term health improvements and resource constraints.

Definitions of Terms
