Background of the Study

Community-led total sanitation (CLTS) is an approach to improving sanitation by involving local communities in identifying sanitation problems and developing solutions. It focuses on the importance of eliminating open defecation, improving hygiene practices, and ensuring safe waste management. In Kogi State, where rural communities are heavily reliant on traditional practices, CLTS has been promoted as a strategy to combat poor sanitation and the spread of waterborne diseases. Despite efforts to implement CLTS, challenges such as cultural beliefs, inadequate resources, and limited governmental support persist, hampering the full potential of the initiative.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of CLTS initiatives in Kogi State, focusing on their impact on public health, the sustainability of sanitation practices, and community participation. By examining these factors, the study will provide valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of CLTS as a tool for improving public health through sanitation in rural communities.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the widespread promotion of CLTS in Kogi State, the state still faces significant sanitation challenges, including high rates of open defecation and the spread of diseases like cholera and typhoid. The implementation of CLTS has not been entirely successful in eradicating open defecation or improving sanitation behaviors in many communities. This study aims to identify the factors that affect the success of CLTS initiatives in Kogi State and assess their impact on public health.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of CLTS initiatives in improving sanitation and reducing open defecation in Kogi State.
  2. To assess the role of community participation in the success of CLTS programs.
  3. To identify challenges and limitations associated with the implementation of CLTS in Kogi State.

Research Questions

  1. How effective have CLTS initiatives been in reducing open defecation and improving sanitation in Kogi State?
  2. What is the level of community participation in CLTS programs in Kogi State, and how does it impact the success of the initiative?
  3. What are the key challenges and barriers to the successful implementation of CLTS in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Communities with high levels of participation in CLTS initiatives experience a greater reduction in open defecation than those with low participation.
  2. CLTS programs are effective in improving sanitation practices and reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases in Kogi State.
  3. Socio-cultural factors and lack of resources negatively impact the success of CLTS initiatives in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on evaluating CLTS initiatives in rural communities in Kogi State, with an emphasis on their impact on sanitation practices and public health. Limitations may include difficulty in measuring the full impact of CLTS due to the long-term nature of sanitation behavior change and possible biases in self-reported participation.

Definitions of Terms

  • Community-led Total Sanitation (CLTS): A participatory approach to sanitation that encourages communities to take responsibility for improving their own sanitation and eliminating open defecation.
  • Open Defecation: The practice of defecating in open spaces, which is a major contributor to waterborne diseases and poor sanitation.
  • Sanitation: The provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human waste, including toilets and waste management practices.
