Background of the Study

Polio, a crippling viral disease that predominantly affects children under five, has been a major public health challenge for decades. However, global efforts to eradicate polio have significantly reduced its prevalence, with the World Health Organization (WHO) and various national health bodies aiming for a polio-free world. Nigeria has made notable progress in polio eradication, particularly through the implementation of immunization campaigns. Kaduna State, which has historically been a polio-endemic area, has seen considerable efforts from healthcare workers in reducing the incidence of the disease.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) play a central role in polio eradication through vaccination campaigns, surveillance, community mobilization, and educating families about the importance of immunization. They are on the front lines of these efforts, tasked with ensuring that every child receives the full dosage of the polio vaccine. However, the role of healthcare workers in polio eradication in Kaduna State has not been extensively examined. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of healthcare workers in polio eradication, focusing on their challenges, strategies, and the impact of their work in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Despite significant progress, polio remains a persistent challenge in some regions of Nigeria, including Kaduna State. While healthcare workers have been central to eradication efforts, challenges such as vaccine refusal, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and cultural barriers continue to hinder full immunization coverage. Additionally, healthcare workers often face logistical issues, including transportation difficulties and shortage of vaccines, which impact their ability to reach all children.

A deeper understanding of the role of healthcare workers in polio eradication is essential to improving the effectiveness of immunization campaigns in Kaduna State. This study seeks to evaluate the contributions, challenges, and successes of healthcare workers in the state’s efforts to eradicate polio.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of healthcare workers in polio eradication in Kaduna State.
  2. To assess the challenges faced by healthcare workers in implementing polio vaccination campaigns.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing the effectiveness of healthcare workers in polio eradication in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

  1. What role do healthcare workers play in the eradication of polio in Kaduna State?
  2. What challenges do healthcare workers face in the implementation of polio vaccination campaigns?
  3. How can the effectiveness of healthcare workers in polio eradication be improved in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Healthcare workers’ active involvement in immunization campaigns is positively associated with increased polio vaccination coverage in Kaduna State.
  2. Logistical and cultural barriers significantly hinder the effectiveness of healthcare workers in polio eradication efforts in Kaduna State.
  3. Enhanced training and support for healthcare workers lead to more successful polio vaccination campaigns in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on evaluating the role of healthcare workers in the polio eradication efforts in Kaduna State. It will explore both the successes and challenges of healthcare workers in these campaigns. Limitations may include difficulty accessing remote health facilities and the possibility of recall bias in responses.

Definitions of Terms
