Background of the Study

The growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension has highlighted the need for public health interventions focused on healthy eating habits. Mobile health (mHealth) apps have emerged as an innovative tool to address this issue, providing users with personalized health recommendations and the ability to track their dietary behaviors. In Kogi State, like many other regions in Nigeria, poor dietary practices are a significant public health challenge. The integration of mobile health applications into daily life offers an opportunity to combat this issue by providing accessible, real-time health-related information. Mobile apps have gained traction in various health contexts, including fitness tracking, mental health management, and chronic disease management. However, their role in promoting healthy eating habits in specific regions like Kogi State remains underexplored.

In recent years, mobile health apps have become essential in promoting health education and behavior change, including encouraging healthier eating practices. Many of these apps provide features such as meal tracking, nutritional information, exercise guidance, and reminders, all of which can significantly contribute to improving eating habits. In the context of Kogi State, a region with diverse socio-cultural and economic challenges, understanding the effectiveness of these mobile health tools in influencing dietary choices can provide valuable insights for public health interventions. This research aims to assess how mobile health apps are utilized in Kogi State, their effectiveness in promoting healthy eating habits, and the factors that influence their usage.

Statement of the Problem

The prevalence of poor eating habits in Kogi State has led to an increase in diet-related chronic diseases. Despite widespread efforts to educate the public about the benefits of healthy eating, the region continues to experience significant health challenges associated with unhealthy diets. One of the emerging solutions to this issue is the use of mobile health applications, which offer personalized guidance and support in adopting healthier dietary behaviors. However, the impact of these technologies on the eating habits of individuals in Kogi State has not been adequately assessed. The role of mobile health apps in improving dietary behaviors, their accessibility, and their effectiveness in a region with limited digital infrastructure remains largely unknown. There is a need for empirical data that evaluates the use of mobile health apps in promoting healthy eating, particularly in Kogi State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the adoption rate of mobile health apps among residents of Kogi State.
  2. To determine the effectiveness of mobile health apps in promoting healthy eating habits in Kogi State.
  3. To identify the factors influencing the use of mobile health apps for dietary management in Kogi State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of adoption of mobile health apps among residents of Kogi State?
  2. How effective are mobile health apps in promoting healthy eating habits in Kogi State?
  3. What are the barriers to the use of mobile health apps in Kogi State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There is a significant relationship between the adoption of mobile health apps and the improvement of healthy eating habits in Kogi State.
  2. The effectiveness of mobile health apps in promoting healthy eating habits is influenced by socio-economic factors in Kogi State.
  3. There are significant barriers to the use of mobile health apps for promoting healthy eating habits in Kogi State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study focuses on the residents of Kogi State, Nigeria, with an emphasis on individuals who use or are exposed to mobile health applications. The research will assess the effectiveness of these apps in promoting healthy eating habits within this specific population. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data from app users, as well as the limited access to digital devices and mobile health apps in some areas of the state.
