Background of the Study
The management of student identities has always been a critical function for universities. Student information, including academic records, personal details, and payment history, is often stored in centralized databases, making it vulnerable to security breaches and unauthorized access. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and tamper-proof nature, offers a promising solution to these security concerns. By implementing blockchain-based student identity management, universities can create a secure, transparent, and efficient system for managing student identities and academic records. This study investigates the feasibility and implementation of a blockchain-based student identity management system at Federal University, Lafia, focusing on how the technology can enhance data security, reduce fraud, and streamline administrative processes.

Statement of the Problem
At Federal University, Lafia, the current student identity management system is centralized, making it susceptible to hacking, data manipulation, and unauthorized access. Students' personal and academic information is often subject to human error and vulnerabilities associated with traditional databases. Blockchain, by design, offers an immutable ledger and secure methods of storing data, which could potentially resolve many of these issues. However, the practical implementation of blockchain technology in student identity management at the university remains unexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by designing and implementing a blockchain-based solution.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design and implement a blockchain-based student identity management system for Federal University, Lafia.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of the blockchain system in improving the security and transparency of student identity management.
  3. To analyze the impact of the blockchain-based system on administrative processes and data access control at the university.

Research Questions

  1. How can blockchain technology be effectively implemented to manage student identities at Federal University, Lafia?
  2. What are the key benefits of using a blockchain-based system for student identity management compared to traditional centralized databases?
  3. How does the blockchain-based system enhance the security and transparency of student data management at the university?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The implementation of a blockchain-based student identity management system will significantly improve the security of student data at Federal University, Lafia.
  2. The blockchain-based system will reduce administrative errors and improve data transparency in student identity management.
  3. The adoption of blockchain technology will streamline the student identity management process and enhance data access control at the university.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the advancement of blockchain applications in higher education by providing Federal University, Lafia with a secure, transparent, and efficient solution for managing student identities and academic records. The findings will serve as a model for other institutions seeking to enhance their data security and administrative processes using blockchain technology.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the design and implementation of a blockchain-based student identity management system at Federal University, Lafia (Lafia LGA, Nasarawa State). The research will evaluate the system’s effectiveness in securing student data and streamlining administrative functions. Limitations include the technical complexity of implementing blockchain in a university setting and the need for specialized infrastructure to support the blockchain system.

Definitions of Terms
Blockchain: A decentralized digital ledger that records transactions across many computers in a secure and immutable manner.
Student Identity Management: The process of managing and verifying students' personal and academic information.
Decentralized Database: A database that stores data across multiple locations or systems, reducing the risk of data manipulation and unauthorized access.
