Background of the Study

The petroleum industry is a vital component of Nigeria’s economy, and fuel station attendants play a crucial role in the distribution of petroleum products. However, these workers are continually exposed to hazardous substances—such as fuel, kerosene, and other petrochemical compounds—that can lead to various skin diseases. Chronic dermal exposure may result in conditions ranging from contact dermatitis and allergic reactions to more severe skin infections and chemical burns (Bello et al., 2023).
In Katsina State, where fuel stations are numerous and safety protocols may not always be strictly enforced, attendants often lack adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and training on chemical handling. Environmental factors such as high ambient temperatures and prolonged outdoor work may further exacerbate the effects of chemical exposure on the skin. Despite the occupational risks, few studies have comprehensively examined the prevalence of skin diseases among these workers or identified the key risk factors involved. Such information is critical not only for improving worker health but also for informing regulatory policies and interventions that promote occupational safety.
This study, therefore, seeks to evaluate the prevalence of skin diseases among fuel station attendants in Katsina State, investigate the relationship between chemical exposure and dermal conditions, and identify preventive measures that can be implemented to protect workers.

Statement of the Problem

Many fuel station attendants in Katsina State are exposed to hazardous chemicals without proper protection, leading to a high risk of skin diseases. Reports from local clinics indicate frequent cases of dermatitis and chemical burns among attendants; however, there is little systematic data quantifying these conditions. The lack of regular health monitoring, insufficient training on handling hazardous substances, and non-adherence to occupational safety standards contribute to this problem. This not only affects the health and productivity of the workers but also imposes an economic burden on the local healthcare system. Consequently, there is an urgent need to assess the prevalence and risk factors of skin diseases among fuel station attendants in Katsina State and to recommend effective safety and prevention strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To determine the prevalence of skin diseases among fuel station attendants in Katsina State.

  2. To identify occupational and environmental risk factors contributing to skin diseases in this population.

  3. To recommend interventions and safety measures to reduce the incidence of skin diseases.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of skin diseases among fuel station attendants in Katsina State?

  2. Which occupational factors (e.g., chemical exposure, PPE usage) contribute most significantly to these conditions?

  3. What preventive strategies can be implemented to reduce the occurrence of skin diseases among these workers?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Fuel station attendants in Katsina State experience a high prevalence of skin diseases.

  2. Prolonged chemical exposure and inadequate use of PPE significantly increase the risk of skin diseases.

  3. Implementing targeted occupational safety interventions will reduce the incidence of skin diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on fuel station attendants in selected urban and rural areas of Katsina State. Data will be collected through surveys, clinical examinations, and interviews. Limitations include potential underreporting of skin conditions due to stigma or fear of job loss, and challenges in accessing comprehensive health records.

Definitions of Terms

  • Skin Diseases: Medical conditions affecting the skin, including dermatitis, infections, and chemical burns.

  • Fuel Station Attendants: Workers involved in the dispensing of fuel and maintenance of fuel stations.

  • Occupational Exposure: Contact with hazardous substances in the work environment.
