Background of the Study

The oil and gas sector is a highly demanding industry characterized by long working hours, exposure to hazardous conditions, and job instability. These factors contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression among workers (Adekunle & Musa, 2024). In Kaduna State, the oil and gas workforce faces intense work pressure, which can negatively impact their mental health.

Research shows that workers in high-risk industries such as oil and gas are more susceptible to mental health disorders due to workplace stressors (Bello et al., 2023). Anxiety and depression among these workers can lead to reduced job performance, increased absenteeism, and a higher risk of workplace accidents. Despite these challenges, there is limited research on mental health conditions among oil and gas workers in Kaduna State. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among oil and gas workers and identify factors contributing to these conditions.

Statement of the Problem

Oil and gas workers in Kaduna State are exposed to multiple occupational stressors, including job uncertainty, safety hazards, and work-related fatigue. These challenges contribute to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. However, there is a lack of data on the prevalence of these conditions among oil and gas workers in the state. This study seeks to assess the impact of work-related stress on mental health and propose interventions for reducing depression and anxiety among oil and gas employees.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety among oil and gas workers in Kaduna State.

  2. To examine work-related factors contributing to depression and anxiety.

  3. To recommend strategies for improving mental health support for oil and gas workers.

Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of depression and anxiety among oil and gas workers in Kaduna State?

  2. What are the key work-related factors contributing to mental health issues?

  3. What measures can be implemented to improve mental health support for oil and gas workers?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Depression and anxiety are prevalent among oil and gas workers in Kaduna State.

  2. Work-related stressors significantly contribute to mental health disorders in the oil and gas sector.

  3. Implementing workplace mental health programs will improve workers' well-being.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oil and gas workers in Kaduna State. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining mental health data due to workplace confidentiality policies.

Definitions of Terms

  • Depression: A mental health condition characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, and fatigue.

  • Anxiety: A mental health disorder marked by excessive worry and fear.

  • Workplace Stressors: Factors in a work environment that contribute to physical and mental strain.
