Background of the Study

Workplace bullying is a significant occupational hazard that affects employees' psychological well-being and job satisfaction. It includes verbal abuse, intimidation, harassment, and exclusionary behavior, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced work performance (Eze & Adewale, 2024). Studies indicate that workplace bullying is prevalent across various sectors, but its impact is often underestimated, leading to long-term mental health consequences for employees.

In Benue State, employees in both public and private sectors have reported cases of workplace bullying, yet there is limited research on its effects on mental health. Workplace bullying not only affects individual employees but also reduces workplace productivity and creates a toxic work environment (Ogundele et al., 2023). This study seeks to investigate the prevalence of workplace bullying in Benue State and its impact on employees’ mental health.

Statement of the Problem

Many employees in Benue State experience workplace bullying, which negatively affects their mental health and job performance. However, due to workplace hierarchies and fear of retaliation, many victims do not report bullying incidents. The lack of research on workplace bullying in Benue State has made it difficult to implement effective policies to address the issue. This study aims to assess the impact of workplace bullying on employees’ mental health and suggest measures to mitigate it.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the prevalence of workplace bullying in organizations in Benue State.

  2. To assess the impact of workplace bullying on employees’ mental health.

  3. To recommend policies for preventing and managing workplace bullying.

Research Questions

  1. How prevalent is workplace bullying in organizations in Benue State?

  2. What are the psychological effects of workplace bullying on employees?

  3. What policies can be implemented to reduce workplace bullying?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Workplace bullying significantly affects employees’ mental health in Benue State.

  2. Employees who experience workplace bullying are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression.

  3. Implementing anti-bullying policies will improve employees’ mental well-being and workplace productivity.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on employees from various organizations in Benue State, assessing their experiences with workplace bullying and its mental health impact. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining honest responses due to fear of retaliation from employers or colleagues.
