Background of the Study
Teaching is a demanding profession that requires high levels of dedication and emotional resilience. Teachers are responsible for imparting knowledge, managing classrooms, and dealing with students’ behavioral issues, all of which contribute to occupational stress. Prolonged exposure to work-related stress can lead to burnout, which negatively impacts teachers' job performance and overall well-being (Ajayi & Bello, 2024).
In Kebbi State, teachers face numerous challenges, including inadequate remuneration, large class sizes, lack of teaching resources, and administrative pressure. These stressors have been linked to increased cases of anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion among teachers (Usman et al., 2023). Despite the importance of teachers' mental health in ensuring quality education, there is limited research on occupational stress and burnout among educators in Kebbi State. This study aims to assess the levels of stress and burnout among teachers and propose strategies to improve their working conditions.
Statement of the Problem
Many teachers in Kebbi State experience occupational stress due to heavy workloads, job insecurity, and poor working conditions. Persistent stress often leads to burnout, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced job satisfaction. However, there is insufficient research on the extent of burnout among teachers in Kebbi State and the factors contributing to it. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing occupational stress levels among teachers and providing recommendations to improve their well-being.
Objectives of the Study
To examine the prevalence of occupational stress and burnout among teachers in Kebbi State.
To identify the key factors contributing to occupational stress and burnout among teachers.
To propose interventions for reducing stress and improving teachers’ mental health.

Research Hypotheses
Teachers in Kebbi State experience high levels of occupational stress leading to burnout.
Increased workload and poor working conditions are significant contributors to teacher burnout.
Implementing stress management interventions will improve teachers’ mental well-being.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on teachers in primary and secondary schools in Kebbi State, examining their work-related stress and burnout levels. Limitations may include reluctance of teachers to disclose their mental health challenges and difficulty in obtaining official data on teacher well-being.
