Background of the Study

Fire outbreaks in commercial workplaces pose significant risks to lives and property. In Nigeria, including Niger State, incidents of workplace fires have led to substantial economic losses, injuries, and fatalities due to inadequate fire safety measures (Eze & Ibrahim, 2024).

Studies indicate that common causes of workplace fires include electrical faults, improper storage of flammable materials, and lack of fire safety training (Adebayo et al., 2023). Despite national fire safety regulations, many businesses in Niger State lack proper fire prevention systems such as extinguishers, fire alarms, and emergency exit plans. This study seeks to evaluate fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces in Niger State, highlighting gaps and recommending improvements.

Statement of the Problem

Many commercial workplaces in Niger State operate with limited fire safety measures, increasing the risk of devastating fire outbreaks. Businesses often fail to conduct fire risk assessments, provide fire safety training, or equip workplaces with adequate fire protection systems. The lack of preparedness has resulted in several fire incidents that could have been prevented. This study aims to assess the level of fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces and identify measures to enhance fire safety compliance.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current level of fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces in Niger State.

  2. To identify key factors contributing to poor fire safety practices.

  3. To recommend measures for improving fire safety preparedness in workplaces.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces in Niger State?

  2. What factors contribute to inadequate fire safety compliance?

  3. What strategies can improve fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Fire safety preparedness in commercial workplaces in Niger State is inadequate.

  2. Lack of fire safety training and poor enforcement of regulations contribute to fire hazards.

  3. Improved fire safety policies and training programs can enhance workplace fire preparedness.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on commercial workplaces such as offices, retail stores, and warehouses in Niger State. Data will be collected from business owners, employees, and fire safety officials. Limitations may include lack of access to private business premises and underreporting of past fire incidents.

Definitions of Terms

  • Fire Safety Preparedness: Measures taken to prevent and respond to fire outbreaks in workplaces.

  • Commercial Workplaces: Business environments such as offices, stores, and warehouses.

  • Fire Prevention Systems: Equipment and procedures used to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.
